Default Replaced car2u with homelink

I had the original Homelink on my 05, and it worked great.

But then, when the mirror door on the visor broke, it was replaced under warranty, but I ended up with the Lear Car2U.

After much frustration with the whole issue of programming it so I can get into my gated community, I decided to do something about it.

First, got a homelink unit off ebay for $40, and installed the unit in my knee bolster, just below the buttons for the hatch and gas door.

Then, I painted the cover to match the interior.

Ran constant power and ground to it.

Programmed it in 2 minutes, and works great, is easy to reach.

Wow, that's a neat solution.

Have Homelink on my Range Rover and the Lear unit on my 2009. I found the Lear unit to be much easier to program but others have said I must simply be lucky.

Good job!

I like that solution! I installed my eBay Homelink in my visor, but that involved (several) trips to an upholstery shop, etc. THis is a much easier solution.

What kind of range are you getting ... the only thing I would worry about is having too much metal around the transmitter (hence why it is often in the visor).

nice job and a nice place for it if you dont want to do the visor thing modification and it looks very "in place" there as well.
I originally put mine kinda down there but decided to take out the visor and do it that way.
WAs alot easier then i thot. I use mine for running M2W so its very cool to open and close the exhaust as well as the garage. regards, pAuL

Does any Homelink transmitter work?

Did you have to cut out a hole for it, or did it attach with adhesive? I'm assuming you drilled holes for power and ground.

1) Range IS less because it is lower, but 20 yards or so is ok for me

2) I just did not want to fool with the visor

3) The unit mounts on the back side of the bolster - I used 3M industrial tape

4) I did have to drill holes in the bolster for the buttons and cover plate to attach

5) I also cut away the plastic skin/foam on the outside so the cover would fit in

6) I ran power/ground from the cigarette lighter - no drilling anywhere else

Default Well..

The transmitter is 2 1/2" x 3" x 1/2" thick.. it mounts behind... you need holes to make the buttons work... Face Plate snaps on..

i would like to make a positive comment before the car2u bashing continues. i lived with my 07 vert for over a year trying every now and then to program the car2u (using the clip door remote instead). i finally called the support line and in about 45 SECONDS, over the phone, the nice woman put me through the steps to get it working. it was that simple and fast (she said that some doors need to be programmed in a different/reverse sequence). for all of you that are having problems and you have gone to their site to make sure that you openers are compatable - JUST CALL THEM. it was the BEST customer support ever. i cannot believe that i was foolish enough to wait that long before calling.

Ditto on the good words!

It seems that GM's instructions in the owner's manual neglected to say that some remotes (older Stanley) like mine have reversed sequence.

One call to Car2U folks, which was met by no waiting to talk to a human and no annoying "para espanol" menu message. A few questions and she gave me the scoop and said to call them back from the car phone if there were issues. Used the new instructions and there weren't.

Outstanding service and the fine lady didn't have an offshore accent.

They need good customer service with their "product." Homelink was a more useful product that really didn't require hand holding to get it to function.

I have the Homelink in my 05 C6. My wife just got an '09 Malibu with the Lear system. I found the Lear system to be eaiser and faster to program and it has better range.

The downside is that the Lear system does not seem compatible with my X-10 lamp controls inside the home.

Wow, I found a pretty serious problem. Looks like you are missing the clutch pedal, how do you even drive your car without that?

I installed a custom transmission product called "Powerglide" - it has TWO speeds, and is fully automatic - makes driving a whole lot easier, and doesn't use a clutch........
