Onstar Renewal
I must have had a weak moment because I just renewed onstar in my 2008 GMC Sierra. I presently have four cars with onstar and I have always cancelled after the free 1 year subscription expired.
I called to cancel my subscription and the advisor went through the whole routine where they have reduced the price from 18.95/month to 12.95/month. She offered me 100 free minutes and rolled over the remaining minutes I had. The only thing I use onstar for is the hands free calling which I use a few times a month (I do not carry a cell phone). The reason I finally gave in is that she said I can transfer the plan to my Corvette in the Spring when I put it on the road and than back to the truck in the fall. She also said that onstar can be put on hold with the unused time remaining when the plan is taken off of hold. I can also cancel at any time and get a refund for the unused time.

I have a 1 year free subscription that is running out on my Cadillac SRX on January 31st, 2009 (OnStar is inactive in the Vette).
I called them to cancel after the Trial period, and they only asked me why I was cancelling. I told them I wasn't using the system and I didn't need it.
They said fine and didn't offer me any rebates or try to convince me to stay.
There might be different policies for us Canucks.
Mike.

I got a call about renewing mine and I told them no because I thought is was too expensive. They just said "okay, just press the blue button if you ever decide to reactivate". No other offer was made. Guess we're both happy.

Why not...if you don't use it then don't subscribe...or would it be better to buy an after market radio with xm if you want it...and I don't believe you can add on-star if the vehicle is not equipped with it...IMHO.

Fortunately for me, I factory ordered an '05 back before they forced you into those options (so I bought my car intentionally with NEITHER of those). It disgusts me that GM forces this extra hardware on your car, with the sole intention of generating extra monthly income. I've always said that my Corvettes will outlast XM and OnStar, and I just don't like the idea of having equipment or buttons in my car that are functionless 20 years from now.
For the OP, are you 100% sure that they'll let you transfer your subscription back and forth like that? I mean, I'm sure the person TOLD you that. But, back in the days that I had OnStar, I didn't trust those agents to have enough intelligence to spell their own names, let alone understand the plans that they support.
The Onstar system basically has a built-in cell phone (I understand it's with Verizon??). And, as such, part of the monthly cost of the service is keeping that integrated cell phone active. (It does more than just make personal calls... the integrated cell phone is the method for all 2-way communications between OnStar and your car, data and/or voice.) My initial instinct is that the agent sold you a lie, and that they're not going to keep both cell phones online (because they probably can't flip-flop between the two that easily, and probably would only accomplish this if they keep both online). I'll bet there are a bunch of charges to flip-flop (if they CAN do it)?
But, what do I know? I haven't had OnStar for years. Maybe they've changed. I just smell an OnStar sales rat when I hear that offer, and I wonder if you've confirmed this from a 2nd source? Are you sure they'll do this, and if so, is it FREE to flip-flop? (Or, will they charge you so much for each change, that you may as well keep both online anyway?)

That's what I paid a few months back ($147 year, or $12.95 month.) They rolled over my remaining talk time and threw in another 100 minutes. I won't use runflats so I renew each year gladly. The price break was just a nice surprise.

I've got 5 newer GM cars with Onstar and have asked them many times why they don't have a discounted family plan. No one can answer and consequently I turn it off after 1 yeaqr. They are missing a great revenue opportunity by not bundling cars together at a discount. I just can't see spending $70 / month for Onstar.
On the other hand, XM radio offers a family plan and each car only costs me $6.95 / month on the family plan which seems to be a fair value.
