NO, it has not yet been proven over time. It may have great power, get great gas mileage, but it will be years down the road before your question can be answered.

I think it's the best small block chevy has built to date, but is the Z06 a small block or a big block like the past 427's. If the Z06 is a small block then I consider it the best to date.

Ls 2/3
Other than a few more cubic inches are there any changes not in the LS2?
And yes it is a truly great engine. It is based on established American engine design, utilizing cubic inches and lower rpm's to provide a serviceable high performance engine design at a reasonable cost.
It's not a high reving European design calling for extreme tolerances, and constant servicing to keep it running. Just look at the rpms required to develop similiar HP on a Ferraria 599. I think it's around 9000rpm.
One you can afford, one you admire for it's precision because your a car nut.

The LS series are great engines but only time will tell if they have the overall impact of the original small block chevy.

I agree it will take some time before this can be answered. And yes, there are changes from the LS2 to the LS3 beyond just additional displacement (injectors, manifold, valves, and more).

"In honor of jpee"
that's hard to answer with zero years on it. well, ok, a couple..
but the 283, 327, and 350 in small blocks may be the best ever. or, in bigs it might be the 454 which I think I read somewhere was the most used engine for watercraft (maybe most used V8 or auto/truck engine).
simple, inexpensive to put together and maintain, parts available, test of time, durability, power/torque, all these criteria may not describe the LS3 when compared to the older engines. but it may, as those fade out of the picture for whatever reason.
