Default rusty axle hubs

New ’08 C6 and thought I’d install wheel locks. Pulled the rear wheel and found massive rusting on the threads of the axle bolt but not the nut. Pulled the front and had a hard time getting the wheel off due to the rusting of the center axle hub. This is angry, red, pitting kind of corrosion. The car was bought new 2 weeks ago in New Jersey – production date of 09/2007. Clean Carfax. Should I be worried?

It may have been sitting on a lot for awhile. Clean it up a little to make yourself feel better. I probably would.

rust on the hub surfaces/rotors is completly normal. Nothing to be worried about. Cosmetic in nature and easily corrected with zinc coating.

i use anti sieze, it comes in grey and keeps rust out. Pretty common for cars that either get washed alot (which happens alot at the dealer) or run in the rain. I dont wash my car,,,,i use detail spray to clean off the dirty areas. of course its not a DD either. paul

Look in the phone book for Zinc platers and have them zinc-wash your rotors.

OR.

If your C6 has the Z51 option, you can buy Baer Decelarotor or Baer Eradispeed rotors. They are pre-zinc plated and they look and perform awesome.

The follwing pictures of Baer Eradispeed rotors were originally posted by CF member "TrayC6"

The Eradispeed rotors are awesome, and zinc coating is a first rate option, especially on a brand new car. I did not like the rust and it was visible on the center of the rotors on my
'06 vert. The calipers were also looking faded so I decided to just paint them. Did it several months ago and they still look good.

As another option, here is what I did:
I cleaned mine off with Naval Jelly (purchased hardware store). Easy to use and great at removing rust. Then I painted the hubs and while I was at it painted the rotor hats (center), rotor vents (edges), and brake calipers with Duplicolor Caliper paint. Here is a thread to an old post that I used for advice when I did mine.

It’s easy to do and mine came out really nice.

You said it,"New Jersey". Its very humid there, thats why...its normal. Just like the guy in Houston who has lots of condensation dripping from his car in the summer
