OnStar and insurance discounts
I just bought the wife a 2009 (CPO) Cadillac SRX. Typical GM it doesn't have Bluetooth. So I started investigating options, everything from the cheap clip on BT devices, to LOCKPICK to actually using OnStar and sharing my Verizon minutes.
On another forum one of the members said he got a 15% discount off his insurance primimum (about $15/month) because the vehicle has OnStar. So when you apply the $15 discount to the monthly costs for the OnStar Safe and Sound plan ($18.95/month and the extra Verizon phone line $9.95/month) suddenly this option seems reasonable - about $16 per month or 3 trips to McDonalds.
Has anyone actually tried and received an insurance discount because our GM cars have OnStar??
Am calling my agent on Monday to find out. I'll report back with my findings.

BTW - I got the same 35% discount on my 2008 CTS-4 with OnStar.

If you use GMAC as your insurance they give a decent discount if you have onstar, you have to do less than a certain mileage and you have to agree to onstar sharing that information with GMAC insurance.
As for other insurance you should get a discount due to the fact that it is like having LOJACK as they can track your vehicle.

Yes, USAA insurance gave me a discount for having OnStar. I think you'll find most companies will do that. If you drive less than 10-12000 miles a year in your vette, you may also get additional discounts.

I get multiple so-called auto insurance discounts but with teenage drivers in the house (and one with an accident/citation for an accident) Lord knows I could use an additional discount to help offset the penalty rates I pay. I never thought to ask if OnStar would qualify as an additional auto insurance discount...but I will.
An OnStar auto insurance discount makes OnStar even more attractive but I think I paid around $140.00 to renew the OnStar subscription for a year. Even without an insurance discount it still works out to pennies a day.
Thanks for mentioning the OnStar discount.

I did some checking with club buddies this morning, the consensus is most insurance companies offer a discount, but it's against your comprehensive coverage. I just checked my policy and for the 2009 Cadillac SRX I pay $41 EVERY SIX MONTHS. So assuming I get a 15% discount my savings will come to about $6.16 EVERY SIX MONTHS or $1.03 per MONTH.
While I'll take it, it doesn't off set the costs associated with using the OnStar hands free phone system and no easy work around short of a visor clip on unit that requires frequent charging. I'm screwed no matter what. Thanks GM for not sweating the details. No BT on a 2009 Cadillac maybe Obama Motor Corporation will show you the light.
