Default Rearend Fluid / 2 or 3 Quarts?

I'm heading to the dealer to buy LS Dexron gear oil to change the rearend fluid on my own. Do I need to buy three quarts or will two do it? I think it calls for 2.11 quarts but not positive. Some have said it took less than 2 quarts to refill.

Any idea what typically runs per quart?

Thanks.

It varies by model year, Z06 vs. base car, domestic vs. export, and differential oil cooler vs. no cooler. If your car takes 2.11 quarts, then you will need 3 quarts to fill completly, with 0.89 left quarts over for next time. No additive should be used with the new GM Dexron LS oil. The capacity should be in your owners manual.

My 2005 Z51 domestic (no oil cooler) requires 1.82 quarts, so I get by on 2 bottles with a little left over.

That makes sense. I didn't realize the 05's took less, so that could explain why some needed less than 2 quarts.

Thanks.

The GM Dexron LS 75w-90, has worked great for me for 25,000 miles now. So I will stick with it.

Well, 2 quarts of Amsoil plus 4 ounces of additive, will get you to 2.11 quarts just fine without buying a 3rd quart.

I'm going to try the GM Dexron LS for now.

2.12 qts for non Z51
2.28 for Z51
2.96 for Z06

I believe those are from completely dry, so just doing a change will probably not take all of that. It just needs to come to the bottom of the fill hole, which I've done several where 2 qts were plenty.

I used both the new LS Dex and Amsoil with additive, both work great.
Do some parking lot figure 8s after the change and that will help work in the additive to the clutchs.

Thanks for the info folks.

Just picked up 3 quarts at the dealer. $70.
Just over $22/quart + tax.

Could have let the dealer do it, maybe for free, but I'll take a shot at it myself. I like doing stuff like that.
