clay will not remove swirls in the clear coat (fine scratches)
It will make your paint smooth and remove the grit.
Too remove swirls goto autogeek.net and figure out what you need.

A clay bar does not remove scratches. It removes surface impurities.
Daytona Bob beat me to it.

My local detail guy just did my car 2 nights ago...
Wash
McGuires Clay with soapy water spray bottle
Wash/Dry
McGuires Hi-Tech Polish
McGuires Hi-Tech Wax (2 coats)
Orbital Buffer...
Man my car is show car quality paint now, I kid you not!
He spent 11am-6pm, had a helper too... cost me $200 bucks (which was a steal, I gave him a $50 tip).

After you do the clay bar thing, try McGuires NXT.2 polish, easy on and easy off. A couple of coats of that and you'll be amazed. Best thing I have used on my black Z, and it dose'nt cost a fortune.

Zaino Fusion. You can do it by hand or use and orbital buffer..but make sure you take your time with the buffer and follow instructions. The layer zaino z5pro with zfx on it..swirls will go bye bye. Nice thing about the zaino system is ......the swirls will come back.. you cant help that... when you wash the car, you have to "move the dirt" on the surface.. but the next swirls will be in the fine layers of zaino..and one coat will fill them again.....
been doing it for years.......

I just bought a new black daily driver and it was swirled to heck. You need to use a machine polisher to get the swirls out. I had to use a very heavy machine polish to get mine out. I have a Griots Machine which is very similar to the Porter Cable model that most people here use. I tried Zaino Fusion but it would not get all my swirls out. Without a machine it may be impossible to get yours out depending on how deep they are. I also don't like the idea of just filling in scratches with a product. I wanted mine gone permanently. Z5 will fill some but if they are heavy swirls you'll need about 200 coats IMHO it is best to get the paint as perfect as possible before applying a sealer.
Oh and I can't agree with Wolfdogs on this, if you wash your car the proper way with two buckets, a grit catcher and a good microfiber sponge you should not introduce scratches again. I have washed mine and it still looks perfect with no new scratches. I use a soap dispenser on my hose so I wash off any loose dirt before I rub on the paint with my microfiber.

I you're not sure what you're doing you may want to get a professional to do it rather than experiment on your vette. Use the wrong compound and you'll end up ruining your paint job.
