Default Corvette Racing Wins GT1 in 24 Hours of Le Mans

LE MANS, France, June 14, 2009 -- Corvette Racing brought down the curtain on the GT1 era with a victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Johnny O'Connell, Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia scored Corvette Racing's sixth class victory in the world's biggest sports car race with the No. 63 Compuware Corvette C6.R. The winning Corvette completed 342 laps, racing to a six-lap margin of victory over the No. 73 Luc Alphand Aventures Corvette C6.R of Yann Clairay, Julien Jousse and Xavier Maassen. The No. 64 Compuware Corvette C6.R of Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta, and Marcel Fassler retired from the lead in the 22nd hour with an apparent gearbox problem.

Today's win was Corvette Racing's 16th podium finish at Le Mans since 2000. It was the fourth Le Mans class win for O'Connell and Magnussen, and the second consecutive Le Mans GT1 victory for Garcia. O'Connell became the first American driver to win four class titles in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Just a little note from the race.

That Post Title breaks one of those old unwritten laws.

It's a shame for the guys who may have DVR'd the race to watch later..

Just an FYI for the future.

ALSO, it's old news now...

What was that can of aerosol they used to clean off the front end during the last pit stop? What ever it was, it sure cleaned her up nice. You couldn't see any road grime or rubber on the nose when she crossed the finish line.

Damn shame #64 had to drop out with gearbox problems and only two hours to go. it would have been 1, 2, 3 for Corvette C6.Rs.

Next year -> GT2. Should be very interesting against all the 911's, M3's and Ferrari's.

I have confidential GM racing info that it wasn't the gear box but actually was the dreaded "DBS".

Hate to say it, but seriously was there any doubt?

Before the race started everyone knew Corvette was winning that class, no brainer.

Well, there is always the chance they could get knocked out (as O'Connell almost was during the night) or fail to finish due to equipment failure (as happened with the #64 car), so nothing's guaranteed.

It's a shame the 64 car went out - looked like there was going to be a nice duel to the finish between the two Corvette Racing cars at the end of the race.

Yeah, they pretty much got that one by default since there were only 3 cars left running in GT1 by that point. They were never in contention.
The Lamborghini was done after 1 lap. What was up with that?

What would you expect from the Lambo? I think that by the time it was through with half a lap, it was out of breath!
I told a friend of mine what happened with the Lambo (He had a Countach back in the day) and he told me that he wasn't surprised. While driving home from the dealership, his side mirror just fell off the car. For the most part, our cars ARE pretty dependable

I'm just glad the car started after they cleaned it. That would have been a bad time for the starter or clutch to quit working. I wasn't too crazy about the guy with his hat on during the national anthem. I couldn't tell who it was, and don't care if he was American or not, especially on Flag Day.

It was a nice win but there wasn't much doubt. A big reason why they need to move to where the competition is.

Garcia drove for AM last year. He replaced Ron Fellows at the start of this season for the longer races (he also won at Sebring this year as well as Daytona 24).

After yesterday's race, it looks like Ferrari is where the main competition is going to be in GT2.
