Default Warranty Necessity?

Hey, I just bought my '07 Vette last week, and am wondering if you guys think it is necessary to buy an extended warranty? It is a certified used vehicle, so it carries the 12mo/12K bumper-to-bumper warranty and the remainder of the 5yr powertrain warranty. The dealer wanted like $2500 for the GMPP for 3 years...

GM builds the cost of its factory warranty into the price of the car. According to published statements, that's $2300 for the bumper to bumper 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. Most of that expense will be due to failures occurring in the first 90 days 3,000 miles after purchase. After that point, warranty costs are very low because most manufacturing defects will have already shown themselves and been corrected. So buying a extended warranty, unless it is very cheap, will almost always be a money loser for the buyer (money maker for the warranty seller). That shouldn't be a surprise, of course, if GM didn't make money on those warranties, they wouldn't be selling them.

I was quoted under 1000 dollars with 0 dollar deductible for a I think 3 year 100k warranty (I think it was 3 years), back when they had different pricing. The pricing changed August 31st. I talked to a gentleman from Fichtner Chevrolet, he is a forum member and offers the best prices. I'm sure others know his name and info!

Actually the major use of the extended warranties is to repair the electronics/high end features of modern cars. Drive trains are pretty much bullet proof for the average user. If you notice GM only covered the drive train in the 5/100K warranty. All it takes is one repair that requires replacement of the EBCM and BPMV in the ABS system to more than pay for the cost of the plan.

As for GMPP prices check with Dennis Fichtner to see how much it will cost. He can probably give you a much better price for the plan.

I bought the GM extended warranty (3 years) for my '01 coupe before the factory warranty expired. It was the best money (under $900) I ever spent as the car needed emission work, cat and O2 parts and a climate control unit. I priced all the parts and the labor charge of $100 per hour the repairs came to just over $4,000.
I will be looking into the extended warranty option for my '08 coupe.

Send Dennis Fichtner (Forum Vendor) your VIN for a list of rates/deductibles/coverage/etc. Best prices anywhere and substantially less than your dealer's quote.

The GMPP is an insurance policy. Not everyone feels the need for it, but only you can place a value on your peace of mind.

It's peace of mind. The GMPP Web site says they offer no charge financing. That is not exactly true. The Internet dealers with the discount prices require payment in full.

Send me your VIN and current miles to dfichtner@fichtnerchevrolet.com and I will check out your ISD for you and give you a quote on a GMPP.

GMPP thru me another curve ball, they raised prices last year on 9-1 and held off this year, their annual price increase was always on 10-1 so that is what we feel will happen again this year. If you are wanting a GMPP please do not wait until 9-28, 9-29 or 9-30 to get them. Please help me out by sending a little earlier since I have a bunch to do that last week.

GMPP does offer financing but they also charge you at retail price, we deeply discount our plans and so we can not do the finance plan that they offer, unknown to customers they charge the dealer a large fee to do the finance plan.

I thought Fed Law says emissions has to be covered for a minimum of 50k miles no matter how many years.

My car was such a POS when it was new, that it was a no brainer for me to purchase the GMPP from Fichtner when it was 35 months old. Not one problem since I bought the policy. Oh Well, I'm covered till October 2011. We shall see, hoonose, eddie

The manufacturer is obligated under federal law to replace emission related parts, cats, sensors, etc (basically anything that causes you to fail an emissions test) free of charge for the first 80,000 miles. Its in writing in your owner's manual. This is a federal mandate, separate from any other warranty you may have.

The climate control unit for the C6 costs $356 from Gene, and is a simple plug and play replacement you can easily do in a few minutes in your driveway.

Still think you came out ahead for your $900?

Excellent. Thank you, very much. I just sent over an email with the requested information.

My story is that GM went bankrupt because they were losing so much money on the extended warranties, especially the Corvette.
Yeah, I know the financial arrangements, but it still makes a good story.
Realistically, we "made" money with the GMPP warranty on our 2001 (traded at 5 yrs/68k miles) and 2006 (traded at 3 yrs/44k miles). Others have not been so "lucky".
Sometimes I feel like a sucker for buying a car with as many problems as the Corvette, but having the 0 ded GMPP keeps the annoyance in my head instead of in my wallet.

Although I tend to keep my vehicles a good number of years, I've never been a believer in extended warranties. Statistically, extended warranties are a better deal for the insurance provider than the policy holder. That being said everyone's emotional and financial tolerance for risk is different. Like with any insurance, if you sleep better having the coverage buy it.

It may not be a factor in your case but be aware modifying the car has the potential to 'void' vast portions of an extended warranty just the same as with the OEM new car warranty.

I think it is good insurance against a catastrophic failure. I just had the fear of major issues and have had a few things covered by it. It really does not take much going wrong to equal $1500.

I, personally, would not consider a pre-owned corvette without some kind of extended Service Contract (GMPP). That being said, you "could" run into difficulty if your vette was modified...just depends on the dealership.
