I read something on Mobil's website about this exact issue. The answer was "yes, of course it does". It is the same formula as you can find in the single quart containers. I just bought a couple of 5 quart jugs myself for $23.50 each. Hell of a price. The back of the jug does in fact reference the Corvette and code GM4718M is present. This is the 5w30 weight.

I wouldn't expect that the formula is any different, and the jug I bought a couple of weeks ago also does mention GM4718M as well.

Oddly enough, I went a couple weeks ago to Walmart to get some 5W-30 for my 1st oil change and ran into a confusing situation to say the least.
They had 5 different types of Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30.
1. The original (I guess) which reads for Corvettes, etc.
2. Truck and SUV
3. High Mileage (which was a no brainer as my car on has 1200 miles on it)
4. Ultimate - which extends oil changes to 15,000 miles

They did not have any of the 5 qt jugs in the original, so I asked one of the mechanics.....mistake. His explanation was no better than what I thought. Which was how can there possibly be that much difference in the 4 types. All synthetic and all 5W-30????

Decided to wait an go across town to a different Walmart and did find the "Original" that said for Corvettes on the back so I bought it. This stores mechanic says there is a difference in the formulas.

What do you experts think?

That one doesn't meet the Corvette spec, but the 5W-30 that the owners manual calls out does meet the 4718M spec.

I can't imagine the engine is going to self destuct because the oil has a different formula. Just be sure it's the proper weight, 5W-30!

I would just make sure the 4718M spec is displayed.

The difference in the 5, other than weight, is just additives! Pure marketing crap and hype. None of those will harm your V8. Good God, how can guys get so annal about synthetic oil that you more than likely will change more often than your underwear, mileage wise...!!! These GM engines ain't going to blow because you have used supposedly the wrong formula of "$7 per quart man made lubricant....!!!!"
I bet they would not blow if you, God Forbid, use real authentic dino oil...., like we were forced to use in the '50's muscle cars. How many blew one of those because you used Chevron vs. Shell even Texaco?? I once knew a retired SAE engineer....man, he knew the truth about oil and marketing gimmicks....but hey, be as annal as you want, it is your car!!

Believe it or not. Many companies DO make products especially for Wal-Mart of lesser quality. Snapper mower actually refused to do this and told Wal-Mart to shove it.

given GM's attitude on warranty repairs, not running the "approved" oil that meets their specs may be reason to deny coverage!

For what it's worth, synthetic oil is not man made. It's refined differently so that the molecular contect is uniform. This keeps the oil from "breaking down".

Mobil one is all the same no matter where you get it. I would never run anything else than a good synthetic.
