in New Jersey - you pays sales tax when you register any car - that's clear
if I buy from an out of state dealer(not a private party) - say WV, PA, NY, CT, NH, OH, MD - do you need to pays that states sales tax too - or if you don't know,
what's the best way to find out.

I don't know how New Jersey does it, but for PA, if you buy out of state, and the sales tax is less than PA, then you pay the difference...the idea is to discourage folks from buying out-of-state to get out of paying the taxes...

For example, I am a NYS resident. When I picked up my GS on Saturday in NJ, they charged and collected the NYS sales tax.

I know here in CA, if you pay sales tax in another state, you deduct that amount from the tax that you pay when you register in CA.
I'm pretty sure that its similar in other states.

Some states will collect the sales tax from your state at the time of sale....this will be clearly marked on the paperwork.....you will not have to pay sales tax twice....
ex) I purchased a car from OH to register in MA....OH collected 5% and MA collected the difference between 6.25% when I registered it.....

I live in CA and purchased a new car from a dealer in Nebraska. I paid the taxes and registration fees in the state I live in, CA. I also had to get smog cert. (on a brand new car, go figure) and have DMV inspect for the CA certificate sticker in the engine compartment, even though the car was 50 state legal. I paid the CA taxes and registration fees at the DMV where I live.

When I bought my car in Virginia, they asked what the tax rate was in the county in NC that I plan on registering it in. This worked out to my advantage because the sales tax rate for cars where I'm at was about half the rate it is for other purchases.
You will not have to pay tax twice, and you are generally locked into paying the rate that is in effect where you register or plan on registering the vehicle

Oregon, one of the good things!
Bought a new car in Michigan. I paid 150.00 total to plate it for 4 years.
They have no sales or property tax on cars here. In Oregon.
SAME car taxes would be $4,400 in Nebaska. For 2 years

basically when you go and register the car in NJ, the forms will ask you whether you paid sales tax in the other state, and if you did, you have to provide a receipt for it. However most out of state dealers won't charge you sales tax if you are going to have to pay in NJ, at least most that I dealt with.

Why would one think you'd be charged twice..unless it's California?! You pay where you register the car.AT THAT RATE.If the state has reciprocal tax you can in fact pay your rate there and they send it to DMV in your state.I wouldn't do that, but some states do have that.

I bought my Vette in Wisconsin and paid no sales tax at the time of purchase. Illinois collected sales tax when I registered the car.

Typically, you will pay the sales tax in your state but there is exceptions like California. I would either call DMVs or go on the web when you narrow your choices down. Buying new out of state does have its hassles. The biggy is waiting for all the paper to (like MSO) clear before you can get a tag. Where I work, if you don't have a tag you can't get a vehicle sticker. If you don't have a sticker, your car gets searched everytime you go through the entrance gate.
