New top thought
I got a call today that my new roof is here and painted. Ready to put on. I know they won't do it but I will ask if I can buy my old one and have them paint it black or very dark blue like the transparent roof looks. I like that color on Silver. I am sure they will tell me it is a safety item recall and they have to destroy it.

from what I've read, they reuse your old hardware, so there's no frame to put the old one on your car. of course, if they did just give you a complete top, that would be a different story.
but the question is, knowing that the top could easily fly off (and that's why they're replacing it for free), do you really want the potential liability of it flying into the windshield of a car behind you? that is, partially, what you're trying to prevent in getting a new top, isn't it?
