Default Key FOB Not Being Recognized. Need Advice

I have an 06 Automatic, 54K miles. For the last 3 days it will not initially recognize the key Fob’s. I have it set on “passive entry”. When trying to open the doors the door lock light does blink, but that’s all; the car is completely dead! To start it I need to open the trunk with the key, manually open the door, get in with the key FOB and it starts normal.

I tried starting it with the FOB more than 10 ft. away and it displayed, “NO KEY FOBS DETECTED” with the FOB inside it starts perfect. When I leave the car, the passive lock system works perfect, so I have ruled out dead FOB batteries.

The car does work fine for some period after I’ve initially opened it with the key. I don’t have an accurate estimate but feel it’s ok for about an hour. For sure after overnight I have to initially access the car with the key.

Can anyone give me any advice as to what has happened, what else I might check, remedies, etc. Many thanks, Dusty.

Good diagnosis so far, but if you're still on your original FOB battery, I'd start by replacing that-- CR2032 as I recall. Have you tried putting it into the receiver in the glove box ?

The other option I might consider is simply resetting everything by diconnecting the car's battery for 15 minutes - - -you'll then also need to re-index the windows, etc . . .

Good luck - -please post what you learn ? Thanks.

You have ruled out FOB batteries but how long has it been since you changed them? They could be getting weak. I was just looking at the remote to my F150 truck and it's about 7 years old -- I really don't remember if I've ever changed them and I have noticed the range it will unlock is getting shorter. Time for new batteries for me! How about you?

How about the car battery? Is it still the original? These things do crazy things when the battery starts to get weak.

Same symptoms my 06 coupe had. Started out with the fob not being able to unlock the hatch when using the button on the fob. Then, being outside the car and near the locked door with the fob, the door would not unlock when I pulled on the door handle. Then, inside the car, "NO FOBS DETECTED."

Turned out to be the car battery, even though the car with 35K miles on it was a DD.

Thanks guys for all the comments. The car battery is 12-14 months old. It's a US made Delco replacement. Tomorrow I'll have checked anyway. I haven't put the fob in the glove compartment receiver yet but I had planned on doing this. First I'll replace the FOB batteries. I also like the idea about disconnecting the battery to let things reset and will do that. Also tomorrow I'm going to contact my dealer EVS, Saukville. Corvettes are their specialty. Any additional comments are certainly welcome. Thanks again, Dusty.

Our 2009 started having #1 fob troubles at 18 months/16k miles after production. I replaced both fob batteries with recent-date new ones, problem cured.

After an additional 6 months and 5k miles, #1 fob again started having problems. Replaced battery again and everything is fine.

Not sure why it's eating fob batteries so quickly.

Timely post for me. I am also have fob issues. No problems opening the doors but with the fob in my right pants pocket the "NO FOBS DETECTED" shows up. I have taken out the fob and held it in the middle of the rear cargo space just to test things and the car start up. I have replaced the fob battery. I have the original car battery in my '05. Sounds like a new battery for me soon.

From the symptoms you describe, you cannot rule out the fob battery as the passive lock system does not depend on the fob being operational...it will lock anyway. Replace the fob battery and I'll bet everything will be fine again. Use a nickel to pry open the fob and replace the CR2032 battery.

This may sound weird but keep fob away from your cell phone, it will cause interference.

And the cell phone can interfere MORE if the fob battery is low.

I also found that sometimes there is issues with the replacement battery you might use. I swapped out the battery in my #1 fob and still had the "No FOB detected" issue. I replaced it again to have the same issue. I finally put the battery from #2 into #1, and didn't have the issue. Don't know if Chevy uses a HD or some other special type of original battery, but the fact that 2 newly purchased batteries from the store didn't work, and the battery from #2 FOB worked just amazes me.

From 15/20 ft. FOB #1 and #2 would not activate the doors I replaced the battery in FOB#1 with a Duracell CR2032. FRom the same 15/20 ft. FOB#1 opened the doors. I again tried FOB#2 with the original 4+ yr. old battery and it would not. At the moment it looks like the problems I described earlier may in fact be related to the FOB battery, as many of you suggested. I am going to follow thru on other checks and will post my findings accordingly. In the meantime thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. Stay tuned, Dusty

If you disconnect the car battery, you'll need to reset the window indexing for both windows after you reconnect it.

Close the car door. Raise the window and hold the up switch an extra 3 seconds. Release. Without lowering the window, hold the up switch again for 3 seconds. Release. Done.

This is called resetting of the window indexing or power window initialize and is in the owner's manual. See page 2-17 of the 2005 owner’s manual, page 2-18 of the 2006 owner’s manual, page 87 of the 2007 owner’s manual, page 2-18 of the 2008 owner’s manual, page 2-18 of the 2009 owner's manual, ,or page 3-18 of the 2010 owner's manual. -JFP
When you replace the fob battery, be sure the positive side goes down, and after insertion, lightly press the back of the battery in 2 or 3 places around the battery to be sure it's seated good.

When you were locked out, did you try the passenger door?

It may be your outer, driver's door switch that's not letting you open the door.

Yes, I tried both sides, plus the trunk. The new battery in FOB#1 seems to have defined and solved the problem. I'll do addl. testing tomorrow. Thanks for your input. Dusty.

I've replaced the batteries in both Key FOBs and all is perfect for the last several days. I'd say that was the problem. If anything else shows up I'll let everyone know. Thanks again for all your input. Dusty
