no need for flaming, that is what i would do and what i have done with great success. i once placed my briefcase containing the fob in the hatch. makes the onstar subscription worth every penny.

BTW, you can save lots of money for a spare key by getting the local locksmith to cut you a duplicate using a blank, I think its a B106 from a Saturn.
I tried that and the key was hopeless, wouldn't even fit the lock properly.
Lost my patience, ordered a blank from Fichtner Chevrolet, local dealer cut it free.

I have the B106 blank in my wallet. Works perfectly on my 07 Vette. I couldn't get the B106 blank locally, everyone had the B106P which has the plastic top like the one for the Vette so I got it on line and the local hardware store cut it for me for free since it was my blank.

Unfortunately; you still need a fob to start the car, and that could be lost or stolen.
My technique:
Got a spare fob with new battery (2006 fob works for our 2009, not sure if the reverse is true), programmed and tested it. Wrapped in aluminum foil to make it temporarily "dead", hidden deep inside the car.
If the fob battery goes dead, it will still work in the glove box slot after removing the foil.
Got a spare key, tested it, and hidden outside the car someplace hard to find but able to get to it without a jack.
Now, I can lose everything but still get the key, open the trunk, find the fob, unwrap and drive home.
Because I've got it, I'll never need it.

I recall some people saying theirs would work in the slot even with no battery, others have said you need to have a batery installed even if it's a dead battery.
I would be reluctant to leave a dead battery installed, might increase the chances of leakage/corrosion.

I shelved my U3U shortly after buying the car (man what a POS that thing is) and installed a homebrew CarPC. I use a Verizon aircard to keep the PC "connected". I can send an email to the car and request to unlock the doors, get a current GPS location, or any variety of reports from the OBD2 port. Plus I have REAL Bluetooth support now and not that joke of a GM implementation.
Admittedly, this is a long answer to a short question. The easy thing is to hide a hard key outside and a FOB inside. Chances are they'll just break your window out to steal stuff before they'll bother searching for a Hide-A-Key anyway.

I had cancelled my Onstar subscription, but figured if I ever needed it I could always call back and restart the subscription 
. I can't imagine they have a policy about waiting a certain amount of time to start service in case the doors need to be unlocked.

I have a spare key hidden under the car and one in my wallet. A fob without a battery is hidden in the car and a spare battery is also inside. In 5 1/2 years I have not needed any of them but you never know.

can not activate onstar without being in the car with it running then u push the blue button twice. i was locked out sunday onstar no help un less its already activated. spare key now behind license plate
