Default Hey, Bob Lutz!... here's what the 50th Anniversary car should have been...

I received this from a good friend of mine who used to own a '99 hartop and was an avid Forum member until his Corvette's woes got the best of him and he felt like he had to bail... (to maintain his sanity)

After I sent him a link to Monica's 50th Anniversary site, this was his reply:

~~~~~~~~~
Great. Just another funky graphics package (ala the purple/yellow Pace Car), NO horsepower upgrade (LS6), limited availability (1 per dealer), at a cost that'll easily exceed that of a optioned ZO-6. Why can't GM build a decent anniversary anything is beyond me.
My 50th Anniversary Vette:
- 1 exterior color only (White)
- 1 interior color only (Red)
- Custom 50th Anniversary logos on the seats and floormats
- Small fender badges (like the ZO6). NO wild graphics.
- GS hash marks (Red)
- HOT version of the LS6 (425 HP)* (cam and exhaust could easily generate the extra 20 HP)
- 18" chrome 5-spoke wheels front and rear w/ Pirelli P-Zero's if Goodyear can't get the sizes right.
- Coupe models only
* Current LS6 engine would be the standard engine after 2003. My HOT LS6 gets carried over into next year's ZO6.
Bob Lutz would be so proud of me!!
~~~~~~~~~~

I couldn't agree with him any more... that'd be "the" perfect 50th car, it'd smell of heritage.. but Chevy seems to have other ideas... go figure. :seeya

I would add a convert also in that color. Then all the ads can show the first and 50th cars in same white/red scheme side by side. That's what it's all about - tugging at the heartstrings via historical lineage . It's about a consumer's ICONIC image of a certain brand. The magenta/beige/beige is too feminine and generic .
It's a Corvette , not a Jaguar or Lexus.

I like the convertible idea... not sure 300 would pass the common sense test though (I know why you said only 300, but the number of Corvette enthusiasts - and Chevy dealers - has multiplied exponentially since 1953) - and remember, the first 300 were all hand built.

Isn't white available as an exterior color?
Isn't red available as an interior color?

All you guys saying "it should be gold" or "it should be white with red interior" -- will YOU buy a white car with a red interior?

GM picked the color combination they did because it will SELL.

And you're not going to see a Coupe or Convertible with substantially more power until C6, so get over it already.

BTW, why is this thread in C6 General Discussion?

We keep talking about the 425HP engine but, according to Dave Hill, that engine NEEDS the fixed roof to handle the power and G forces exerted on the body. Maybe he's just whistling Dixie, but that's the story line.

I wanted gold or white w/red. Yeah, I'd have bought it, but I don't know that everyone would.

The allotment procedure doesn't make sense either. It was said the anniversary package would not be limited - whoever ordered it would get it. I think they are just saying every dealer will get one and those who sell more Vettes get more options to order it.

Now I've given up on an anniversary package so I have to decide whether to order a 2003 in the color I choose or wait til 2004 & see if there is a collectors edition as rumored.

Many people keep saying that they want some form of super car for the 50th anniversary (and wish that the other anniveraries did too); but this makes me wonder, what do other manufacturers do for their car's anniversaries (if anything.)

Has any manufacturer ever made a seriously upgraded version of a car for its anniversary?

Not really. Porsche did an odd light purplish color for their 50 th anniv in '97 and a weird multi -hue eggplant color with light WOOD interior for their 2000 996 Millenium Edition. Neither sold well - I wonder why ? Methinks the Chevy/Porsche marketing types hang around at the same bars too much.

So why are people expecting so much more from the Corvette when nobody else does it for their cars?
