2011 GS Manual Transmisson
Anybody know about the 2011 GS transmisson ? My cousin just got his Grand Sport and was asking about the transmission. Apparently the 2011 Z06 has carbon fiber syncros. Does he have the same transmission as the Z06 ? Dealer did not know what a syncro was.

The GS and the Z06 use the same transmission, except they have different gear ratios.

Supposedly the carbon-cone setup will eliminate the "cold nibbles" people often complain of. The TR6060 is a re-designed T56 with wider gears. This means that the syncros are narrower (everything must fit in the case still. Wider this = narrower that, basically). Thus, a better material is needed to achieve the same performance of slowing heavier gears with less syncro.

Looks like an old dog (me) might learn something new today. But I'm just not imagining carbon fiber synchros.

Well, if I'm wrong I apologize. Are you sure they are Carbon FIBER though? Carbon and Carbon fiber are not the same thing necessarily. I know there is "carbon steel", so I'm not sure we are all on the same page.

Here, the poster is calling them "carbon fiber".

The details from the 2011 Engineering introduction simply noted them as Carbon Cone Synchros and a little detail discussion followed. They are not Carbon fiber, this I know but there are two methods of introducing Carbon in to the synchros and one as you noted is carbon coated but many have reported that there are problems with the carbon coating wearing off and causing problems in as few as 5,000 miles in the aftermarket (not Corvette but import). In the case of carbon lined, it is a discrete piece of sintered carbon that bonded to the brass and by all accounts this is a much better approach to the use of carbon in the synchros and seems to be the standard now.

They may not be coated, but lined.

For 2010. First and second are triple cone. First gear has sintered bronze synchros and second gear has carbon fiber lined synchros. Third, fourth, fifth, sixth and reverse are double cone sintered bronze. No changes were made for 2011.

Engineering tells a different story.

Great information! Maybe the 2011 version has both?

I get my info from Tremec the manufacturer. I recently pulled a 2010 GS trans with 10,000 miles out to replace the bronze synchros with carbon fiber. The only synchro that was carbon fiber was second. The rest were sintered bronze. It now has carbon fiber in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. I checked with Tremec before posting this to see if the 2011's were the same and they told me they were unchanged from 2010. I'll check again with engineering after the holidays to make sure.
