Default Group 47 Battery

Will a group 47 battery work in a non-Z06, without changes to the battery tray and cables? I think I'll need a new battery soon, and no one in may area carries a group 85 battery on the shelf. My local O'reilly's and Wal-Mart both have group 47 batteries and should be more available should I have a problem when traveling.
Thanks for your help.

maybe it's just the Optimas, but I thought our batts. were 34 or 35 size. Diehard and Odyssey are both 34 too, per my notes. Have you tried Sears?

My understanding is that a 47 will be a better fit than a 35 as in my '07, the original battery is a group 90.

The height will be where the slight difference is, they should be the same width and length.

The group 34 battery has the positive and negative terminals reversed as compared to the stock battery. I didn't know if the group 35 battery would interfer with the cabin filter access door and if the battery cables were long enough to accomodate the increased height.

Anyone install a group 35 Sears Platinum battery in their 2008?

I think you're right, the taller group 35 battery might block access to the cabin air filter.

For starters, here's a chart of battery dimensions:
http://www.gglotus.org/ggtech/batter...size.htm#note2

It gets more complicated when you start comparing cold-cranking-amps, weight, cost, etc.

Note there's a group 34 and 34R... I believe the R-version has the terminals correctly oriented for a 2008 C6:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...-c6-coupe.html

You'd think it'd be simple to choose a replacement battery... gives me a headache every time I try to figure it out.

A group 47 is an H5 and is 190mm high. Depending on the brand, it may actually be 175MM high. The group 85 and 86 that 2005, 2008, and 2009 came with are over 200 MM high so it should fit with no problem. The 2006, 2007 and all Z06's came with the a T5 that is 175MM high with a port. The Z06 needs a port because it is mounted in the trunk.

I work for the largest battery mfg in the world, so if you have a question, I should be able to get you an answer.

I agree. The Group 90 for my 2007 is tough to find. The 47 is about 3/4 inch taller. Might have to loosen the battery and move around to get the cabin filter in and out. But as others said, many places, including Walmart have Group 47's and this is what I probably will use as a replacement

That's what I was thinking....my battery in my '07 is 4 years old this summer, so I've begun thinking about where to get a new one...when, and not if, the need arises....

Funny too is that my battery was made in august of '07 and yet the car was made in june of '07...so GM must have replaced the battery early on.

No Bill, I would not do it pre-emptively at this point, but I want to be ready just in case. My GM VIS had a dead battery incident when it was at the Tech Center and so I'm betting that someone replaced the battery at that point without documenting it...otherwise it's difficult to build a car in June and install a battery that won't be made (in Mexico) until 2 months later...

I have had good luck with WalMart batteries (easy to exchange if they act up) and have looked into them in anticipation of mine dying soon.

I am considering a group 48 because it has 60 more cranking amps than the 47 and is 15 bucks cheaper (it is the regular Everstart, not the Maxx). BUT it is about 2 inches wider requiring the 2 ends of the battery tray to be shaved down flush. It looks like it will fit as the heater hoses and whatever else will not rub.

Anybody else stupid enough to try that?

The cheap Walmart has only a 1 year warranty. Total, 1 year only. Their Maxx has a 6 or 7 year, with 3 year total replacement - or something like that. This is worth $15 more to me.

that really is pretty darned funny! yes, I guess I'll just keep "a little in the bank" ready for when I need a battery. still not sure if it'll be a $80 or $200 one. oh well....

I wouldn't dismiss doing it out of hand, but I just don't think that the two benefits you cite are worth the hassle etc. The $15 is more than made up for by the fact that you are going from a 'Maxx' to a regular battery. The 47 battery cranks the car over just fine, even in cold weather, so the 60 more cranking amps is really not needed. Also remember that GM worked really hard to make the car weigh less...for the most part, we ought to keep it that way.

if you shave down two of the ends of the battery tray, does/will that allow the battery to slide around, or will it still be held in place?

Bill, as long as the clamp is tight, I would expect that it would not slide...maybe a little something like bathtub non slip tape would ensure a solid mounting...
