A new set of high-performance Michelin tires give the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette its highest-ever handling and braking performance, setting a new benchmark for the Detroit automaker’s storied two-door halo car
Thew new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure (ZP) tires give the Corvette an 8 percent gain in maximum lateral acceleration, which allows the coupe to peak at 1.1 g’s. In addition, Chevrolet says that the tires have helped its high performance models come to a complete stop from 60 mph in just over 100 feet, an improvement compared to models with different tires. In addition, Chevrolet says that the new tires helped shave an impressive 3 seconds off of the Corvette’s lap times at Virginia International Raceway.
Chevrolet and Michelin worked together with the automaker’s American LeMans team to develop the tires, which Michelin calls a street version of the racing tire used on closed courses. Available on Corvette Z06s and ZR1s, the 285/30-19 front and 335/25-20 rear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup ZPs will come as part of a pair of new packages. Z06s will be available with a new Z07 package, while ZR1s will offer the tires with a PDE performance package.
Both packages include a full-width racing-style spoiler that helps improve aerodynamics. The Z06′s Z07 group includes GM’s Magnetic Ride Control and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes.
Chevrolet released a video detailing the improvements the tires bring to the Corvette.
Charting the changes
In addition to the new tire option, Corvette Z06s will offer a new carbon fiber hood option. The ZR1′s fifth and sixth gears will feature taller gearing that helps improve fuel economy an impressive 2 mpg to 22 mpg.
All models get new seats and a revised steering wheel for 2012. The seats feature larger bolsters and available microfiber suede inserts to improve grip during aggressive driving. A padded center console and armrest is now included on all models.
Chevrolet says that a new Bose audio system adds two speakers to the current seven thanks to a pair of tweeters located in the instrument panel. Better bass performance also addresses a concern from some owners.
Corvette 2LTs will gain a newly optional Technology Package that adds the Bose stereo, Bluetooth and a USB port, as well as navigation and heads-up display.
Finally, buyers can add red, yellow, silver or gray brake calipers to the Corvette for 2012.
Chevrolet has not released images of the updated 2012 Corvette, aside from the 2012 Centennial Edition (pictured).
