C6 vin numbers/body panels
Can anyone tell me why the C6 body panels do not have vin numbers attached. Salvage yard told me there were none, but didn't know why?

It takes several seconds to put the VIN on the engine block. It requires 2 people. They have to scan the code, mount the engraver, instruct the computer to etch the number, and dismount the engraver. Then they have to make sure the right engine goes into the right car. That costs several dollars just for the labor for each car in addition to the thousands spent on the equipment, bar coding, scanner, and engraver.
Since your labor charge is significantly less and you can get an engraver for $8 from harbor freight, it would cost you a lot less to engrave some numbers yourself than to have the government force GM to do it. But, I agree, since everything is "free" with this administration, it does seem strange they haven't saddled us with several thousand more for each car.

Thanks for the replies. I'm getting ready to have my C6 inspected by the state as "rebuilt salvage" and I don't want them tearing the panels off looking for vin numbers.

I can't answer for new cars but the old muscle cars typically carried vins or partial vins on the vin tag, stamped someplace hard to find on the tub of the car - like under the heater box, one or 2 places on a frame rail, again typically someplace not real easy to see much less grind down, then on the eng, tranny and rearend.
