tranny whine rear end whine anyone have theirs fail???
i have had a high pitched whine now for a few thousand miles. car just turned 57,000 miles. i am looking to get it fixed perhaps this winter. i am curious if anyone else has dealt with this proble before. and if they still drove it and actually had something fail. car is a 2005 6-speed . whine is really noticeable in 5th and 6th gears under light load when cruising. let off gas nothing noise goes away. if i continue driving it am i asking for problems????

OP,
Given your description, it does sound like your rear diff is making noise - i.e. noise on-throttle, but quiet off-throttle.
2005s had weak rear diffs compared to '06 and later models. Some folks with 05s have experienced failure of the diff. Hard to say if yours will grenade. Depends a lot on how it's used (hard launches etc). One that is clear, tho, is that even if your diff doesn't grenade, it will never get quieter. In fact it will continue its current wear pattern on the gear set and get noisier over time.
Obviously, your call, but if it were my car, I'd have the rear diff replaced with an '06 or later rear diff. Then you'd have quiet cruise, and a stronger rear diff.
