Default Glad I got extended warranty

At 48,000 miles on my 07, my rear differential was making noises. Chevy dealer called for a total rebuild, seals and clutches,$500 worth of parts and $1100 worth of labor. I paid $100. Anyone had their C6 differential rebuilt?

Didn't the 07 come with the 5yr/100k power train warranty? Even 5 years ago would be August 2006 which is about 1-2 months after the 07 model start going down the assembly line. If that is the case then go back and get your $100 back.

I love it when people buy an extended warranty on parts that are already under warranty. And the people that love it even more are the ones selling the extended warranty.

Was $1600 more than the cost of your warranty + $100 deductible? (Serious question)

Your car should've already been under factory warranty for that issue.

Or it just needs a fluid change and the stealership is soaking GM for the big 'repair'.

Thanks for the responces. Did some digging in the Warranty Assistance Information and found out on page 6 that my repairs should have been covered. Trying to get ahold of the Dealership as I write.

This extended warranty gave me a replacement car plus Low Jack. Have to look on the signing papers what the accual cost was for this combination.

Now for some reason I feel like a IDIOT for not doing my research better. I always thought I was intellegent. Will responed when I have my questions answered by the dealer. By the way, this dealer is big in Auto Racing, hint - hint.

I thought that only the late 2007's came with the 5/100 powertrain?
Either way, I'm glad he's covered.

FWIW, we "made money" with the GMPP on both our 2001 and then our 2006. Both had recurring electrical problems that took multiple tries and a lot of shop time to fix.

Like any insurance, it's a gamble.

My 36 month b2b just ran out on the '08 a couple of days ago. I bought the GMPP 6 years, 60,000 miles, 0 deductible, Gold for $2500. I only have 7800 miles on it in 3 years so I doubt that I'll ever use up the miles.

I understand that some folks don't see the value in getting the GMPP but I look at it as simply an insurance policy for myself and an incentive to a buyer, if and when I sell it.

It's your money but I'd rather have the money in the bank. Please come back in three years and let us know if you got anything for that one more year of coverage on the power train for $2500. Or for any other failure. The odds are against you.

My 2007 differential was making chattering noises, clunking and jerking in slow turns and all that it needed was the fluid change called for in the following TSB and an axle retorque and problems were gone.

2005-2008 Chevrolet Corvette (Including Z06 and Export)

This bulletin is being revised to change the fluid recommendation and to remove the requirement of adding friction modifier. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-04-20-002 (Section 04 -- Driveline/Axle).

Condition
Some customers may comment on a clunk and/or chatter type noise from the rear of the vehicle while making turns.

Cause
This condition may be caused by slip/stick of the posi-traction clutch plates due to insufficient limited-slip axle additive. As plates slip and stick, a jumping or jerking feel occurs accompanied by a clunk noise.

Correction
Important: DO NOT remove the differential cover from the rear or the two sides. It is not necessary to flush the old fluid from the differential.

Drain and refill the rear differential fluid using the procedure listed below.

Draining Procedure:

Raise and support the vehicle.
Clean any dirt from around the differential drain plug.
If not equipped with a differential cooler, remove the drain plug (1) and washer (2) from the differential.

If equipped with a differential cooler:
4.1. Using a bent tip screwdriver, remove the quick connect fitting retaining ring (3) from the quick connect fitting (4) and discard the retaining ring.

4.2. Remove the differential cooler inlet pipe from the differential nut.

Drain the fluid.

Filling Procedure:

If not equipped with a differential cooler, install the drain plug (1) and washer (2) to the differential.
Tighten
Tighten the differential drain plug to 35 N•m (26 lb ft).

If equipped with a differential cooler:
2.1. Install a new retaining ring.

2.2. Connect the differential cooler pump inlet pipe (2) to the differential. A distinct snap should be heard or felt when assembling the cooler pipe to the fitting.

2.3. To ensure the cooler line is properly installed, give the cooler pipe a gentle pull.

Clean any dirt from around the differential fill plug.
Remove the fill plug and washer from the differential.
Important: DO NOT add any limited-slip additive (friction modifier). With this new fluid (Dexron LS Gear Oil 75W-90) it is no longer required to add friction modifier. If friction modifier is added, it will cause the fluid to lose some of it's friction reducing properties as well as reducing seal life.

Fill the differential with the new DEXRON® LS gear oil, P/N 88862624 (Canadian P/N 88862625). Refer to the table listed below for lubrication specifications.
Check the fluid level to ensure it is even with the bottom of the fill plug hole to no lower than 6 mm (0.25 in) below the opening.
Install the fill plug and washer to the differential.
Tighten
Tighten the differential fill plug to 35 N•m (26 lb ft).

Important: Steps 8-13 are for vehicles equipped with the differential cooling system. For vehicles not equipped with the cooling system, proceed to step 14.

Raise the vehicle so the wheels are about a foot off the floor. Make sure the wheels can spin freely without obstruction from the hoist or any nearby items.
Start the vehicle and put the transmission in second gear. Slowly accelerate to 10 mph and hold this speed for one minute.
Turn the vehicle off .
Raise the vehicle.
Check the fluid level in the differential. Add fluid until the recommended level is reached.
Lower the vehicle.
Once the differential fluid has been changed, the vehicle must be driven in 8-10 tight figure eight maneuvers to heat the fluid and allow the fluid to be worked into the clutch plates.

Mine did the same thing a couple weeks ago...started clicking and grinding on corners. I put two bottles of Royal Purple synthetic gear lube 75-90 and two bottles of GM friction modifier. The noise stopped immediately. UNBELIEVABLE! It is amazing how much noise those rear ends can make and be repaired with additives and new lubricant. Check around, there are hundreds of posts regarding this issue.

That's 6 additional years (August 2017) or 4 years after the factory 5
year/100k miles runs out.

I agree with you as to having the money in the bank but some people feel the same way about health/life insurance. I see posters for fund raising benefits for their survivors all the time.

Murph,

Thanks for the clarification. Those people usually just can't afford health insurance. All insurance is written to benefit the insurance company, not the insured. If you are very wealthy even health insurance is a waste of money. It's all about how much the "potential" risk is and can you afford to accept it. The way I look at it there isn't much that can go wrong with my car that if I pay to get is fixed is going to affect my lifestyle one way or another. Some people buy extended warranties on a $40 electric toothbrush. Now a Corvette isn't an electric toothbrush but the cost to repair versus the cost of car is still relatively small.

Glad to report that the Chevy dealership is crediting me back the $100 thanks to my good friends here. What caused me to whip out the warranty card(it's the private dealership card which is cheaper than GM's) is I was told I would have to pay for a rear end fluid change and to check the stablizer bars front & rear even though there is a TBS on both. My quess, using the card would pay for itself here. Paying for TBS related issues, am not sure that was true. I received a loaner car, a Prius (scary) that my std 5 year warranty would not do for free.

All ended well and if my CD player(non-Bose) dies again in the next 3 years then it will have been worth it. After that,C7 if there is one.

Thanks again. I feel better now.
