Default Please help me make a decision. Dealership has my car for transmission problem.

Dealer claims my car has a faulty transmission, because of a grind in 1st gear. Anyway, they are going to replace it w/ another transmission. My question is....

Should I have them replace the clutch while the transmissions out?

My car has 30k miles and I don't track it nor do HPDE runs. Just mostly highway use.

Thanks guys/gals

ABSOLUTELY! Basically free labor. Contact RICHIERICH from Abel Chevrolet, a Forum Sponsor and Vendor, and he will hook you up with a LS9 dual disk clutch.

I would probably replace the clutch as long as you get the "free" labor.

Highly doubt it'll be free and if they are anything like the dealer im Ever so fortunate to have bought my car from. They wont cover any warranty on the drivetrain if you use an aftermarket clutch

My dealer tried to make me buy a transmission at 7400 miles due to an aftermarket clutch... 1000% Percent disregaurd to the fact that I'm driving a brand new car with serious issue ( Lost reverse gear Gear actually Cracked in half... blame that on a clutch? ) GM techs dont have to report this crap to GM they can just fix the issue and collect a paycheck... as they actually did in the end...

I had my engine replaced under warranty in September/October. I asked the dealer to check the clutch and see if it should be replaced. The car had 25K miles, a fair amount of track and autocross events and a bunch of times the clutch got hot and smelly when I was running the car up on the trailer. When they checked it they found it to be in great condition and recommended that it not be replaced even though they would have made more money replacing the clutch.

On one of my C5's I had to have a clutch replaced under warranty. I wanted to upgrade to a C5 Z06 clutch. My dealer - who I know very well and I deal with the owner, said he would have to charge me the full price for the clutch but no labor charge because GM would not send him a Z06 clutch for my car if they knew I did not have a Z06.

I know dealers could get around that, but I actually appreciated what an honest dealer he is and I gladly paid for the parts. BTW, I have now bought 16 vehicles from them in the last 16 years.

Your clutch is probably fine and I rather doubt the dealership would replace it without any labor charge. You might want to replace the slave cylinder (so the seals are fresh).

Also consider a remote bleeder for the clutch.

And fresh clutch fluid. And fresh tranny fluid.

If you decide to replace the clutch, consider a complete clutch kit -- with new throw-out bearing & flywheel. But with only 30k easy street miles, you probably don't need 'em.

But if you plan to keep the car a long time, might be worth it for peace-of-mind.

Since you don't beat on it I'd say no. If you have mods and ever experience the sticky clutch then I would definitely do it.

I had them add the remote clutch bleeder while the engine was being replaced. They charged me an hour labor.

Default Peace of mind...clutch replacement

I just recently had your same experience. I had 52k miles on my car and 6th gear along with the synchro was bad. While it was apart I had them replace the clutch for peace of mind. They said the clutch was in good shape though. I planned on keeping it at the time (not so sure now...read my most recent post/headache). They say it saved me about $700 in labor. Who knows but it was worth it in the end at the time to me.

Good luck with your decision.
