let's hope this is only a temporary thing for re-tooling or some such.

As a rule does the BG plant discontinue tours during a generation change over? I would think they would till they get the new line running and the new generation of Corvettes are rolling off the line and being sold.

This is so weird. I was just saying to my wife this morning I'd like to take a trip to BG and then I started thinking if they would stop the tours any time soon do to C6 model ending.

One would assume that after the September 14th date there will be some pilot run C7 vehicles going down the line and the secrecy would need to be maintained. If a January unveiling of the C7 at the Detroit Auto Show is the goal, this would seem to be a reasonable time to cut off the tours. I'm at the head of the list to receive a C7 from a local dealer (who sells a lot of 'Vettes, so allocation not an issue) so I'm very interested in when the tours will resume in relation to production start-up. I'd like to do the Buyer's Tour and/or Museum Delivery depending on the timing of each.

I enjoyed my tour last Dec. along with the Museum tour. IF you haven't done it yet, I would suggest doing it before the above mentioned date.

To me its only natural that they would hold off on tours until the new line is built...I am sure it will be a mad house redoing the line for the new C7...

it would be like holding an open house, on a house that is being remodeled..duh

When I worked for GM and we had a re pilot car that was not revealed yet in our plant there was lots of security in place. No outside visitors and no cameras or phones anywhere near the coordined off area while the vehicle was in non-revealed status.

I believe it probably is. My wife and I toured during the retooling for the C6. Not much really going on at that time.

Yeah - it used to be free but the started charging a while back, not sure that it is the best idea for them but sure that not too many are turned away by the price. I always used to stop by for a tour when I was near the factory but now I tend to just skip it since I have been there a bunch.

Bill you are exactly right, they maybe going to make more pilot cars too.
But the big reason is they will be stripping out all the equipment that is going to be replaced in 130 million dollar expansion. They use to take a bull dozer and start pushing equipment out at Doraville assy. If they remake the paint booths they needed to be torn out as fast as possible to allow for placement and construction of new lines and jigs.
This remodel will allow the use of equipment that can be changed around to mfg the next generation car can you say c8.

That's because they could use the same fixtures and jigs. They are now worn out been in use since 1996. See my other post.

It is most definitely a temporary halt. There will be a number of activities going on for the C7 as the end of the C6 approaches and they need to have the plant free from visitors in order to do them. This was announced this morning in a plant wide meeting as the timing of the C7 launch were introduced. Not only is there a significant retooling effort going on, there will be some prototypes having to be sent down the line. It is much easier to do these things without having to worry about who is in the plant and when.
