Pop-up or not to Pop Up?
A guy I work with and I are wanting to know what people really want. Here is the question.
On the next Corvette (C6) what style headlights would you like to have?
1: Pop-up, why not it is history?
2: Non pop up......

Popup lights have been 'Corvette' for 40 years now. I wish we could keep them as I love how it makes the car 'come alive' at night, but they're usefullness is gone now. Maybe we will get a nice compromise and get shuttered ones.

I like the popups. Rather see the continuous body color than the glass areas of the light (during the daytime, anyway).

Re: Pop-up or not to Pop Up?
I read that the C6 will have 2 fixed xenon arc lights on each side of the front. I think it was in Autoweek.
You know what would be really cool as long as you have to have exposed headlights?
How about a type of plastic, or a coating(like paint) on the(whatever material)clear cover that is pigmented to match the body color, but becomes CLEAR when exposed to to some voltage(which comes on when power to the lights is activated). Kind of like a magic trick, the lights disappear when they are turned off!

I'm still not sure about the exposed headlights, though. Non-popup headlights have their advantages over popups, such as weight savings, reduced complexity, and better aerodynamics when in use. Exotic car manufactures seem to have switched from popups to non-popups such as Acura/Honda NSX, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc..
Will GM/Chevrolet keep the hidden headlights in order to continue the Corvette tradition?
I think they may make a compromise such as implementing stationary headlights with some type of trick sliding covers/panels. Remember... they don't necessarily have to be "popup" headlights to continue the tradition. They could be any form of "hidden" or "non-exposed" headlights as far as I'm concerned. I think this idea could be better engineered with higher quality (less mass to move around) as well as keeping aerodynamics roughly the same with or without the lights on.
To add to this idea, it might be cool to have the daytime running lights integrated into this design whereas the daytime running lights are somehow integrated into the headlight covers/panels. The DRLs are visible when the main headlight panels are closed, but the daytime running lights slide into the body as part of the panels when the headlights are exposed. Think of the cool design possibilities. One idea I had pondered in the past was to implement "gill" looking headlights where the gills are actually "shutters" that open to reveal the headlights.
I just hope they don't jump on the "bandwagon" and ditch the "hidden" headlights just to be like the "other" guys.
What they need to do is come up with something completely American.
I have a book that documents the Corvette as having only been the 2nd production car in the world to have non-exposed headlights. (I can't remember the first, but it was an American car that isn't produced anymore. I think it was from the '50s).
Now on the other side of the coin, if they do decide to implement non-popup headlights (always visible), just keep in mind that this would NOT be the first Corvette to have exposed headlights since all pre-'63 Corvettes had exposed headlights. So, I would still be cool with this idea, but I would prefer them to keep the Corvette tradition going.
My 2 cents on the subject.
