I have always defined it as this:
Muscle car - designed and built to go fast, in a straight line, typically 1/4 mile at a time. Fun to ride in, slow(cruising). Not very comfortable. Somewhat heavy.
Sports car - designed and built to go fast, anywhere. Typically lower in the overall height dimension so cornering capabilities increase. Fun to ride in at any speed. Very comfortable. More on the lighter side of the scale.
However, today, some cars are both. I didn't find the new Camaro very "sporty", so to me it's more of a muscle car. Same for the Mustang.

I had both a Camaro IROC-Z and Mustang. Muscle Cars; Yes, Sports Car; No.

somebody your age should know that a Z-28 IS NOT a muscle car, rather a 'pony car', whereas a Chevelle SS IS a 'muscle car'.

Regardless, as others have said the Vette is a sports car with plenty of muscle......end of discussion !

Frankly, this is silly. Hardly anyone would call a vette a muscle car. This is a manufactured debae.

OK here it is from the dictionary

sports car
n.
An automobile equipped for racing, especially an aerodynamically shaped one-passenger or two-passenger vehicle having a low center of gravity and steering and suspension designed for precise control at high speeds.

musclecar
n.
any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving

SO.......according to the dictionary my Z28 IS a Muscle car. Unless you have more authority than the Webster Dictionary.

Goodness, "aerodynamically shaped" eliminates all wide bodied models, especially convertible models. Guess we throw all of these in the "personal car" catagory, especially those having an automatic transmission.

I do !!

I lived and drove in the era of the muscle car !

I don't know how old you are but 'the' muscle car era was the sixties into the early seventies, you and 'Webster' can believe what you want.

The Trans -Am road racing era was synonymous with the 'Pony Car'...ie. Mustang, Camaro, Cuda, Challenger, AMX/Javelin.

While some believe the original 'Muscle car' was the Chrysler hemi of the fifties, most give Delorean the nod with the GTO

I lived through it too and owned a few. The definition of a muscle car has always been somewhat ill defined, which is perfectly okay - except for people who like to argue semantics.

Pony cars were called that for several reasons, not the least of which was they were smaller. That's not true any more, so saying a new Mustang or similar with a V8 and more power than any muscle car of the 60s-70s isn't a muscle car is just silly.

fully aware of that, my original rebuttal (#45) was in reference to the seventies era........hell by the mid seventies there was NO muscle !

I know full well how the two terms have homogenized over the past twenty-thirty years, but back in 'the day' we knew the difference !

All true. The wife's Shelby does everything - accelerate, corner and stop, way safer and more comfy - than the '66 GTO I owned. That said, the GTO is the one car I wish I had back from the many I've owned.

I like how those two dictionary definitions imply the same exact thing save for the latter being specific to American manufacture.

Pedantic indeed.

Don't forget the then new Cougar making the Trans Am circuit. Peter Revson, Dan Gurney, and David Pearson, all drove to the winner's circle in them.
