Charging battery through cigarette lighter

Charging battery through cigarette lighter
Getting ready to connect my Deltran Battery Tender.
Anyone out there using one to maintain their battery through the cigarette lighter plug (the one by the ashtray)?
I've heard that that might distroy the lighter outlet...
Also if anyone is doing this, where are you running the wire to exit the vehicle?
Thanks

Quite a few guys do this, I believe most people lower window slightly and run the wire through it.

I have used the cigarette lighter attachment for my Deltran Battery Tender with no issues. The door sill has 2 indentations in it. Run the wire over one of the indentations and carefully close the door so the wire won't get crimped. Works fine!

A GM labeled battery tender with a cig lighter connector comes OEM as an option on later models like my 2012. I doubt GM would offer this if it destroyed your lighter outlet. I slightly lower the pasenger window to run the cord to an outlet. The window doesn't get hurt in the process either.

I charge mine through the console outlet (under the arm rest).
I run my wire out the bottom of the door opening in the small cut out groove, then shut the door.
No need to leave the window open.

While I would not run a larger charger through the lighter plug, a tender puts out very little current and will not stress the plug at all. An actual cigarette lighter draws many times more current through the plug and the plug is designed for that. I have my tender attached to the garage door opener above the car with the cable coming down through a 1/4 inch open window and plugging into the console outlet. There is a convenient 120v outlet up at the opener, and the cable is up out of the way and can't be tripped over.

I usually cover my car while its in the garage on the battery tender. I didn't like having the wires between the cover and the paint. Easiest way for me...

At least on my '12 GS, only the cigarette lighter 12V receptacle stays open after battery shutdown, so you have to use that one. And yes, it's designed to charge the battery with the OEM accessory CTEK, which puts out 3A. A BT+, which is what I mostly use, only puts out 1.25A, so zero worries. I wouldn't close the door over the wire myself, since you'd mess up the seal over time, even when cable doesn't get damaged. That's why I prefer to use the BT+; I installed a pigtail thru the 'GS' badge, but you can also hook it to the hood battery points stated on the label. The way I charge it with the CTEK when I do, is leaving the door opoen (lights go out after 5 minutes) and cable underneath the door. Also do that when I need to clean or work on the car, since every time you open a door the car 'wakes up' and runs all the crap for 5 minutes each time. Not to mention the stupid door chime blaring every other time for no apparent reason (still don't know why the hell that happens, and it's not that I leave the fob inside the car, or stay inside the car after shutdown).

Where exactly are the indentations?

Also works with the console outlet.
Just remember to disconnect it before driving away.
I leave the console lid open as a reminder.
And don't crimp the cord -- it should move easily when the door is closed.
