I sort of went through the same process in late October last year. I drove the new Boxster and was very impressed with the build quality and handling. Maintenance and repairs on these cars are ridiculous and most people get rid of the newer Porsches before the warranty expires. I came to the conclusion that if I were to get a Porsche, it would have to be a new 911. It is so much more of a car than the Boxster. So having decided on a 911 (and the hefty monthly payment that came along with it), I began to think about configurations and options etc. This was to be my 10th Porsche.

At that same time, I had a strange idea that I might want to check out the Corvette. Note that I had never owned one and last vette I drove was a 1979 model. I test drove a used Z06 that was adolescent-owned and beat to crap and then drove a new Grand Sport. I was convinced that I wanted a vert and decided to wait to find the right one. I was ready to purchase a new one when my local dealer called me with a triple black 2005 vert with 1000 miles on it.

After the test drive, I was sold. The car had plenty of power for me, the handling was great, it was more comfortable than the Boxster. Sure, the fit and finish does not compare to the Boxster, but for my needs, the vette won hands down in many areas. The best part about the vette is that most of the maintenance and repairs can be done at home or by an independent mechanic.

I am not sure I will ever consider another Porsche again.

I must say thank you to the forum. Starting at post 16 and going forward, I am getting great input from folks. I would thank you all individually but that would make for a longer, more boring post. So thank you, to all.

Its your money buy what pleases you. I personelly feel the porsche is under power, or more like has no torque that is my problem with it. I want to move away quickly and torque is what moves you. Yeah the vett is heavy but it has torque and horsepower to overcome if you rev the p car keep the rpms up its okay. I drive a z06 so I'm biased toward Corvettes having owned 29 of the suckers. Oh why worry about heads keep it stock buy best extend warrany you can afford as close to 36/36 miles months.

There are a couple of comments above along these lines. I really don't get this. For me, the Porsche interiors are different, but not better. My vette has an excellent interior. We are out on a central Texas road trip in it right now. We arrived in Austin after 11pm last night, and it has been totally comfortable and really nice.

I do like German interiors. We have a BMW and an MB vehicle right now, and they're great. A whole series of german interiors has been fine. But I have not ever thought that I was giving up anything to drive a current day vette.

One factor for me would be whether I planned on keeping the Boxster when it was out of warranty or just get rid of it before that happens. There are essentially no engine repairs that can happen without dropping the engine out of the car...no access to the top of the engine. I would not want to own a Boxster out of warranty.
Interior space is also a concern. My dad had a Boxster and had to put his golf clubs in the passenger seat...a golf bag would not fit in either the front or rear trunk. I can put two bags in the trunk of my Vert and take a buddy to the golf course with me.

I think it depends on how you want to use the car. I personally would not want a convertible. Porsches are norally more expensive to maintain, especially after the warranty runs out. One of my instructors at an HPDE had a Boxster and I can tell you, I always underestimated them. They are very nice all around cars. You cannot go wrong with either car.

When I looked at a new Boxster the salesman stated the cubbies next to the engine are for "extra quarts of oil". He said a quart of oil every 1-3 k miles is needed.

Boxster/Cayman has a better chassis for handling then a 911 but Porsche will always detune them to keep performance below the 911. I'm not paying $80k for a car that is not all it could be on purpose.

i think your mind will be made up when you started pricing a Boxster S with any options. The base is about $61K. It is stripped with manual seats, vinyl seats, etc. You need to approach $85-90K to get a decently equipped one. The Corvette wins hands down in value and performance. By the way, the Porsche dealers routine perform wallet biopsies and they hurt.

I owned a Honda S2000 for nearly 11 years before I bought my C6. Very hard for me to compare the 2. Worlds apart. I came from always driving imports. Three Porsches, a couple of Alfa's, Fiat's etc. For me the Corvette is a muscle car first, sports car second. I definately felt more connected to the car with my S2000 but admit that the torque in my C6 more than makes up for that lack of "feel" I've driven Boxsters before and they are incredible cars. I guess a few back to back test drives are the best way to decide. Boxster vs. C6? Tough call totally different animals.

IMO, 911 vs C6 would be more of a tough call...

Ooh, makes me want to put a disclaimer on my last statement....it was NOT a tough call between 911 and my ZR1 .

I agree...I was really thinking of the 911 base model vs the C6 base model.

No contest against the ZR1 (any 911 model).

I disagree. The 911 Turbo will run very well with a ZR1.

that is true, but I was less than clear in my statement.

My focus was really on which car do I prefer overall...

Q: can you also comment on the GT3 series Porsches (just curious) ?

I looked at a '13 Boxster S. Dealer said "we get MSRP all day long for these. Maybe I could get you $500 off or something."
