Default I know...XM not another ..but wait..

got the typical call from XM..wanting me to reinstate my radio. Told them point blank their way of business sucks. The woman then offered me one year for 52 bucks everything included..and will be billed, no credit card needed, and its not automatic renewal. One year and thats it.? I took her offer and told her if anything sneaky happens it would be the last time I deal with them and I will cancel right away. Just a thought for those looking to renew...52 bucks for a year, and you can also freeze your subscription for the time periods you do not use your car....so she says..we shall see about that too.

I'm still on my free trial since purchasing new. It ends in April. Do you think I'll be receiving a call or will my XM just shut-off?

If they freeze and its $52 I'm all over it. My problem is the car hibernates 1/2 the year so this would be great. Think I'll call them and find out......

Frank

Midyear- did you ask if any specific promo code got applied??

Usually just shuts off at first then the letters start coming with offers then the phone calls. At least for me that's what happened.

XM has to compress the crap out of their signal...that's why it sounds "less than CD quality."

My free trial of XM expires in Jan 2014, I'm already getting notices to renew now so I won't experience any gap in service.

Why do they compress their signal?

They have to compress the data in order to transmit such a large quantity of information and fit it all within their bandwidth.

Data Compression Algorithms are as much art as they are science, and SIRIUS use a less destructive form of compression and consequently sounds better than XM.

When you download music, like i-tunes, you can select the amount of compression being used and end up with something that sounds pretty good or something that is so bad it's almost painful.

These are broad descriptions, I know, forgive me.

I'm no audio expert, but here's the short answer...
XM Radio is a digital service that has a set amount of radio space to transmit its signal, called bandwidth. To fit all 140-plus channels onto the bandwidth it is assigned, XM must compress their signal. This results in degraded sound quality and decreased volume. The amount of compression varies depending on the type of channel: music channels have more bandwidth, and talk channels less. Volume and quality issues are most noticeable on the talk channels for this reason; they often sound “tinny.”

So that is why my Sony HD sounds so much better and it is Free. I know I am limited to the amount of stations but I am into the sound Quality. I do notice that when I tune a HD station...when it switches to HD the sound quality goes up and the Vol. goes down just slightly. Good Information Thanx.

Sound quality didn't bother me there business practices did. My one year was up in Aug 2012. If they call and get my wife I feel sorry for them.Oh it was on her 2013 2SS Camaro also.

You guys have to be ruthless when you talk to these people, just the way they try to screw us you have to try to screw them at all cost. $24/6months is what I paid a couple of months ago and I could have got the whole year for $48 but I told her I'll call in another 6 months to see if I want it. I never listen to it but like to have it for other people that ride with me if thats what they like. Plus the GF likes studio 54. When i call Onstar or XM to negotiate I give them total hell. Remember they need us not the other way around.
