The long road home.
Well I have come to the end of my enlistment, and this is the route I will be taking in my '06 C6: http://goo.gl/maps/D76hV
Within a hundred miles or so what should I see that Isn't obviously a stop? (Glacier Park, Mount Rushmore) Does anyone have any good places to stay that aren't expensive considering I am a poor unemployed Marine?
I of course will be taking pictures along the way for any and all interested to see how the trip goes!

Thank you for your service.
Wish I had the opportunity to do that trip when I came home in '69 but it didn't happen.
Sounds like you will have a good time. If you can spare an extra day or two, take Hgwy 1 through California instead of 101. It is really a pretty ride. I'm sure you want to get home fast though.
Thanks again for your service and have a safe trip. I'll be looking for you in New York.

I did almost the same route (stopped at Chicago where I lived) on a motorcycle (Honda 750) back in the mid 70s.. It was the 2nd half of the trip. What a way to see the coast. I was out of the Navy (stationed in San Francisco) about 2 years and my friend wanted to see the West coast.. What a beautiful way to see a wonderful part of our country. I alternated stops in campsites (plenty along the way) and cheap hotels (also plenty along the way)..
Thank You for your service and enjoy the trip.

I would suggest staying on the Pacific Coast Highway from Monterrey all the way into San Francisco, rather than cutting back to 101. PCH is a beautiful drive---you wouldn't want to miss it.
Have a great trip!!!

After Glacier NP(you might want to rethink driving in Glacier as they are rebuilding the road and it is a mess. http://www.flatheadbeacon.com/articl...un_road/33491/ Rebuilding won't be completed until 2017) drive to Yellowstone and also visit Devil's Tower in eastern WY, and then when going through South Dakota, visit the Badlands.
As for motels, use TripAdvisor.com to see what's available in the areas where you will be spending the night, to read the reviews. I call the motels directly and ask for a better rate then they have listed on their websites. Works most of the time.
