Default rattle noise coming from underneath car

I know this is a real generic description/question and is difficult to say what it could be. But I've noticed a rattling noise when I'm driving a low speeds (parking garage at work, etc.) and was thinking it sounded like loose exhaust. I briefly checked the mufflers and they didn't seem to make much noise when I pushed around on them. My C5 had a very similar noise but it seems to be louder in the C6 (I've owned this car for only a few months). I don't think it happens only when driving slow thats just the only time I am able to hear it due to wind noise, etc... And it's not when turning, happens in a straight line hitting bumps.

Are there typical suspension noises that indicate something is worn and needs replacing? It sounds like something it loose and rattling... hard to diagnose on the forum but thought I'd ask. I don't know a lot about suspension so any help is appreciated. 2008 A6 with 53k miles.

My 09 did the same thing. Common problem, fixed with new endlinks:

Besides eliminating the noise, the improvement in handling is definitely worth getting it fixed!

I'll check them. Thanks.

What's a ballpark estimate on labor costs to have these replaced?

Not sure how you check 'em... my rear endlinks "seemed" a bit loose by hand. But I had nothing to compare it with.

My repair was no charge under GMPP extended warranty, so the paperwork doesn't list parts cost or labor hours.

I'd estimate 2-3 hours labor, based on this thread (see post #6):
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...-question.html

If you're considering a DIY repair, read post #6 in this thread:

Mine is doing it also. It is the sway bar end links. Its a quick easy fix, but mine is covered under my CPO so Chevy gets to do it for me. If they are bad enough you can feel the looseness in them if you pull at them. Mine are so bad you can see rust dust coming out of them.

You may want to check the x or h pipe support springs in the tunnel area. If they come loose they rattle in the middle of the car .

I hope not but it could be something inside the torque tube. Another possibility if you have headers with 2-stage cats....something inside the cats may have broken loose. It happened to me. A few years ago (mostly at an idle) I noticed a metallic sounding rattle coming from underneath the car. I got the car on a lift and using a stethoscope (with an attached thin metal rod) we pinpointed the rattle inside one of the cats. The inside baffling had broken loose. Check the easy, obvious things first. Good luck.

I, too, think it may be endlinks. Mine also did this and changed at 40K, 60K and 80k miles. Now at 138k and hasn't occurred. Maybe the General finally got em right. Good Luck !

All fixed under the extended GMPP warranty.

Check again to make sure it's not the exhaust. Mine is sometimes hitting the rear craddle, I tried to fix it but didn't eliminate it completly. I can see where the clamps are wearing a little groove in the craddle. Nothing to worry about, but I'll eliminate it some day.

Forgot to mention, my car is 100% stock. It's not making any 'clunking' sounds, only the rattle so could it still be endlinks with no clunking? It also steers and handles great with no problems (has two new front tires).

I plan to get under the car this weekend to see if I can figure it out. Got some new ramps for my birthday that I've not yet used

This was my first thought because the rattle sounds exactly like a loose/rattling license plate. My car does not have a license plate frame and I confirmed the plate is not loose or rattling whatsoever (I even installed little rubber washers on the screws to make sure it's tight and makes no noise).

Do you have a manual transmission? If you do, I bet your hearing the torque tube. Mine rattles like crazy at low rpms and has done it since new. I have been told by many, including a Bowling Green engineer, that it's normal.

you are going to have to get it up in the air to see, but sway bar links are a common source of noises.

I've read that clunking and rattling are signs but mine does not clunck, just rattle.

Your right to say that end links uisually clunk/thump over bumps. It wouldn't hurt to check everything and anything for looseness.

I had some rattling in my Z, it turns out to be the heat shield on the front of the driver side.
