Stripped Out Heat Shield Holes
I'm not exactly sure how I did it, but apparently I stripped out 3 or 4 of the holes that hold the heat shield in above the exhaust. Needless to say, it causes a considerable amount of squeaking and noise and drove me absolutely insane for the longest time trying to figure out where the noise came from.
I have the APR CF Diffuser installed, as well as Akropovic Exhaust and there is limited room to work up above the mufflers. I am able to get my hands up in there, enough so to attempt to put in new bolts, only to realize that the bolts will simply turn and turn forever due to the holes being stripped.
I absolutely loath the idea of removing the diffuser, with its huge undercarriage tray, then dropping the exhaust but I suppose I'll have to if I can't figure anything else out.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to secure that heat shield without the holes/bolts? Also how bad would it be if I attempted to just run the car without the heat shield?
This is the piece I'm referring to. Mine is essentially being held on by the two bolts above the exhaust hangers (not pictured).

Are they sheet metal screws or machine screws that go into a weld nut? If sheet metal screw , try a larger dia. screw. Try a washer under the head, it may be the bolt and you hwill catch the thread further down the shaft. JB weld will hold the screw but will not let you tighten it.

I know this is an old thread.... This same thing just happened to me. I do not believe they are stripped as I can back them back out, however, 3 or 4 of them will not tighten. The bolts just keep spinning. I have tried searching, has this happened to anyone else? Any solutions? Thanks.

Remove the metal shield and repalce it with some self adhesive backed heat shield. HRP world sells this stuff http://www.hrpworld.com/store/defaul.../view/id/6576/
