Default Oil Change? - GS

I have a 2012 GS - bought in Sept 2012. - in the garage during the winter.

At 5,400 miles the computer is telling me to change the oil.

Is this normal?

My last car was a BMW Z4 - with 12,000 miles between changes

I would change the oil then reset the oil life monitor and go from there.

Doesn't sound right. The computer doesn't go by just mileage either, it takes into account how many times the engine has been started, Average RPMs and other things too but it still doesn't seem right.

No, not normal. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

If you bought the car new, who knows why it's telling you this? If you bought it used, who knows why it's telling you this?

Just change the oil, reset the monitor then watch what happens. Maybe your use of the car calls for this type of oil change interval. Enjoy the car.

INteresting I thought it was just a counter. Here's an interesting Q&A of the system:

The first oil change is designed to be called earlier. I actually changed mine at 3K miles. And the tranny, differential, and brake fluid as well. Always a good idea to get rid of assembly crap, plus break-in contaminants, as early as possible. And yes, always reset the DIC after al oil change, even if you don't go by it (like many of us). Good luck.

Whoever changes your oil, make dang sure they know how to change the oil in your GS.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...post1583671506

Manual-trans GS coupe uses a dry-sump system...
10 quarts and TWO drain plugs.

Auto-trans GS (and all GS convertibles?) use a wet-sump oil system...
6 quarts and ONE drain plug.

i've been daily driving my 2012 GS vert since February. it's 14 months old and has 4800 miles on it and i'm down to 32% useful life on my oil. your milage sounds about right to me. mine will get its first change out at the 5000 mile mark.

You do know that you should change oil every 12 months regardless of miles don't you. See the manual.

Why do the verts take less oil and do not have a dry sump. I have a 2011 6 speed vert and was wondering about that for awhile now.

I change the oil on a new car at 1k - then 5k and then every 5k. If it has taken you this long to put 5k on the car, change it every spring and call it a day.

as far as oil capacity, GM figures nobody is going to hit the track without a roof.

My GS is 21 months new with 11k. Just had 2nd change with 5000 for the 1st change. I take it to the 10% reamining or thereabouts.

the dry-sump motor is often intended for track-use, and most (if not all) tracks will not let a 'vert run without
a properly installed rollbar...so GM thought it unnecessary to equip the GS manual 'vert with the dry-sump.

The dry-sump system capacity is the same (10.5 qts) for the LS9, LS7 and LS3 so-equipped motors.
(only the GS coupe w/manual transmission gets the dry-sump LS3)
