Default Help-2006 A6 not going into gear. Shifter moves freely

Hi,

I'm trying to get my car into gear but it won't respond at all. The shifter moves freely (A6 auto) but no gear will engage.

Raised the car up and while I was looking at the shifter linkage going the the driver side trasmission lever for the gears I had a friend move the shifter back and forth. While he did this I did not see any movement from the linkage going to the transmission lever.

I guess the cable broke? Should I take the shifter arpart and see if it's broke?

Can you guys provide me with tips on how to take the shifter apart, what to look for, and web links to pictures if possible?

Thanks ,
Roger

most likely the cable is broken. do not take the shifter apart. pop the cable loose from the trans and see it you can move it freely, and if you can pull it out from the housing, it is the cable, if not, it is the shifter. cranky

Note: GM has alot of trouble with shifters, sometimes have to replace numerous times. Check that cable first, then when you put back together, make sure transmission lever is in neutral "detents" when in neutral on the shifter.

Yep, shift cable. I have an 07 A6 and mine just broke 2 weeks ago... You need to get to it thru the tunnel plate. Mine was covered under GMPP extended warranty.

yeah it was, I was on the highway going home and I moved it from D to S and it felt loose, weird, so I moved it around and it went all over. So I called the shop as I knew if I shut it off I was screwed and drove it straight there and left it.
I'm lucky in that, the shop is so close to my house I can walk home...

This is a hard one to answer, it depends on the + & - of the tolerances of the parts that are used together in every car. Now that is an evasive answer but it the truth. Every part made has a range of tolerances so it is the luck of the draw to put a set together that is not too "loose".

Yup ya were right. The cable broke at the shifter. Picked up a new unit at the dealership for $58. It's already on the car and fixed.

Thanks

Previous owner of my 06 had the shifter 'go south'. Cost him over 800 smackers to get it fixed by the dealer. Two week later his wife wanted a new 2013 C6..6 spd stick! LOL. He had special tires and wheels on his 06, so the put them on the 13 and put the painted rims and brand new tires from the 13 on my 06. Had to change the pressure sensors but the dealer handled that..no money out of my pocket. They had installed a top of the line K-40 radar detector in the 06 and wanted it moved over but the dealer wouldn't do it and the K-40 wanted too much money to do a swap, so they installed a new detector in the 13.
