Default C6 vs. Jaguar F type

I test drove the new Jag last night. It was only the 340HP version but it felt strong....excellent gearing. Beautiful interior and a stunning car, but at base price of $70K it seems a tad overpriced. My '07 C6, which is basically a 10 year old design at this point, feels more stable when changing directions, has quicker steering, a better ride, and is just as solid if not more so. Power? The Vette ate it up. The only F type that would compete with the C6 would be the $92K supercharged V8. This would appear to be a solid testament to how good the "obsolete" C6 really is.

I doubt Corvette and Jag buyers will cross shop this car, but the C7 with it's upscale interior will be a much better value than this new cat.

I don't think it's really fair (to either vehicle) to compare the two. One is a top-bang-for-the-buck sports car with dashes of luxury while the other is a luxury cruiser with elements of a sports car. A better comparison would be something like an SL or 6 series.

With that said, I must cite an old engineering joke:

Why don't the English make TV's?

They haven't found a way to make oil leak from them yet.

Reminds me of a biker joke: If Harley-Davidson made airplanes, would you fly in one?

The comparison is perfectly fair....just ask Jaguar. They're hyping this car as a direct competitor to the 911. They're calling it their first sports car in 50 years. If that doesn't warrant comparison with the Corvette I don't know what does.

I traded my 2008 Jaguar XK convertible for my 2012 C6. I would never trade back. The C6 is faster, sexier, with better overall fit and finish, and best of all...

It actually starts up and runs when you want it to....

The Jaguar is a nice car, my main concern is as the miles rack up, how is the reliability and maintenance.

That is just my point. I could not keep my $95,000.00 XK out of the shop long enough to enjoy it. A major let down. I would NEVER own another Jag....

My neighbor has a very nice Maserati 4.7, but rarely drives it, maybe for that same reason. I love to hear it start up and drive down the street.

Correct, the company is called, "Tata", after its founder, Mr. Tata, an Indian billionaire... I don't know if that is good news or bad...

I know of another former Jaguar XK8 owner with identical experience...the reputation for unreliability goes way back in time.
The joke was you always needed to buy two: one for parts.

Quite unfortunate, really...many of the Jaguar cars are beautifully styled.

Beautiful styling indeed....I wish there was a bit more Jag in the C7 and bit less Transformers.

I've owned a Jag......once. As has been said here: never again.

Whether the comparison is fair or not, others are making it as well, or at least discussing them in the same context. In the June Popular Mechanics, there is a one-pager on the new F-type. At one point the article discusses the E-type Jag's end and the time during which Jaguar focused on less sporty cars, but now teh company is turning back to performance. It notes "Even against Porsche and Corvette, which have been consistently updating their sports cars in the interim [since 1974 when the E-type was discontinued] the F-type does plenty to make up for the 40-year hiatus." This doesn't directly say the F-type is meant as a competitor, but does suggest some market overlap with the Corvette.

Did anyone see the Mad Men episode where one of the execs tried to commit suicide by sitting in his Jag until overcome by CO poisoning? He couldn't get it to start and had to try a different way.

I grew up around Jags, when one of my cousin's was a succesful race car driver of a "D" Jag in the 60's and 70's. They were problematic whether from electrical to carboration (keeping them tuned correctly), and in other areas. While I still loved them for their style, smell, etc. (and wanted the "E" badly), my cousin told me that if I got one, "don't come to me to work on it". (Ha). Ironically, alot ended up dropping Chevy engines in them so that virtually anyone at any shop could work on them. But, I suppose that decades later, things have changed with them. I still like them and think the new designs look great. Alot of money to spend on one and hope the dealerships service dept. knows what their doing.

I would take a C6 or C7 all day every day over the Jag. Also, the Corvette will still be worth something when you decide to sell it.
