A question for members who have had their windows tinted
I had a local outfit do my side and rear hatch windows a month back. I just took it back because the rear glass has problems. There are scratches in a few places and a area on the dotted pattern that looks like it is separated from the glass. I have attached a photo. The lighter area that looks separated runs the full horizontal width. The lady at the shop told me it is difficult to get the material to lay flat on that part of the glass due to the heating elements. My question to those who have had the rear hatch done is have you experienced this problem?

A lot of shops will use black vinyl on that area. It sticks better and you can't tell where it ends and the tint begins if it's done right.
Oh, and the heating elements do not go up that high so she gave you an invalid excuse.

No problems with mine, black vinyl on the matrix and one piece on the remaining.

Black vinyl here also and the between section is a little exposéd, but not much though. They told me to come, back on a hot day and they could work the tint in better in this transitional area. Was satisfied enough that I never went back. Really it is so minor that it is not noticeable unless your look for the seem.

When my rear window was done the installer used a heatgun (on low) as he applied the film. I have no separation and no scratches or gaps.

Mine has some issue around the black dots. Installer said ther was nothing they could do around that area. Of course, they may be "not so good" as I had to have them redo it for a wrinkle that never came out. I'm intrigued about the black vinyl some mention. What's the deal with that beyond the obvious?

The scratches have nothing to do with the film. They sanded the glass in the dots before applying which is way too old school amd is done by lazy tinters. If shrunk properly and worked down over the next couple of days the rear window will come out great! Unfortunately damage is already done and will always be there

I had limo tint put on mine by a good friend that has been in the tinting business for ever and the hatch was done with 2 separate pieces and heated on..no bubbles at all around the matrix...looks tight..happy with it....the first piece of tint starts at the bottom and stops just before the matrix..and the matrix has its separate piece...you would never know that there was 2 pieces of tint whether you look at it inside or out....apparently, not many shops do this and many customers get a lot of bubbling around the matrix...and of course the shops will tell you that is normal.

Sorry to hear about your aggravations and hopefully they make it right. The guy who did my car used the black vinyl over the dots and its pretty seamless. No scuffs, bubbles or jagged edges. I am very happy with it. And he guaranteed it for anything above me causing something. I paid 160.00 and gave him a 20.00 dollar tip.

And the scratches are totally unacceptable. They should be responsible for the repair or replacement of the glass.

Ya, I am pretty easy going. Bought my Vette used and the windows were already tinted.....I may address it down the line. Mines not scratched though, just not totally flat against the dots.
