I add five quarts, the engine doesn't need to be filled to the top of the dip stick mark.

somewhere in the proper operating range.".... At the bottom of the operating range (hash section on dipstick) it generally takes 1 additional qt as also stated in owners manual.

The high oil level most seem inclined, might be the cause of or contribute to the oil smell people are complaining about after an oil change. High RPM could force this extra oil into the PVC system.

Just changed mine yesterday. System specs say 5.5 for my coolerless LS3. I add 5 and start the engine (actually take a short drive) to circulate and check for possible leaks around the filter. Then recheck while still warm and add what's required to fill to the top dipstick mark.
Rechecked today after another 120 miles, but it was still exactly on the mark.
