I thought I'd have to worry about speeding tickets in my Vette

My question is WHY??? You evidently have no respect for the law and/or other drivers. They put those speed limit signs there for a reason, not just to help out the landscape. Don't get me wrong, I do speed, occasionally, but not consistently. You are the type of person I dread to see on the road. Just my opinion.

To the OP: Don't like getting pulled over?...try driving the speed limit. I'm sure it sounds harsh...but it's the LAW!

Not trying to pick a fight but if you speed "occasionally" you are a speeder. I do not think it would help if you tell the LEO that you only do it once in a while.
Maybe it is just the area I live in now but in Phoenix no one is going slower than the 5-10 over and most are going 15-20 over.

I haven't been pulled over in my vette, and hope that I don't. My job is very dependent on me driving, and I don't need any tickets. I have been clean since 2003.

There are 4 rules to safe speeding.
1. Never speed with your nose uncovered. If you are the only car on the road, you have no cover.
2. Don't weave traffic. That is the #1 signal to an LEO following.
3. If you see lines on the road, look on the upcoming bridge for an LEO timing you.
4. Look up on ramps as you pass them. There may be an LEO ready to tag you from behind.
My V1 is just a tool in my car. The most important part of LEO detection is situational awareness. Knock on wood, I haven't been pulled over in many years.

I remember driving 1,700 miles home after buying my Vert. It was so funny because I felt like I was a huge target. In Nebraska, I went by a speed trap where there were 5 or 6 highway patrol cars sitting in the median...I was just sure one was going to pull out and follow me on general principles even though I was only doing maybe 3 or 4 over the limit. It has not been my experience in the last 5 years though. Awareness is the key and a good detector is just one tool in the bag. If you go flying over the top of a hill with no one in front of you, you can't blame the detector...it's your own fault.

I think the OPs issue is more related to his inability to control his speed. He mentions it creeps up. If you plan on driving at a certain speed don't let it creep up. Set the cruise at the lowest speed you want to go and do it. If you want to speed up to pass somebody then just step on the gas and let off. Don't zig zag through traffic, be courteous and blend in with the pack. Despite what the LEOs say they are human and drivers that stick out from the pack will catch their attention. Think of it this way. The pack of drivers is the same as a herd of Wildebeasts and the LEOs are the Lions. The same characteristics that a Lion uses to choose a certain Wildebeast are basically the same characteristics that an LEO uses to select the next ticket recipient.
I don't use radar detectors any more since they don't give sufficient warning but when I did I always noticed if I was driving the Vette the approaching LEO would hit me with radar much further out than if I was in a bland sedan.

So most are going 15-20 over...does that make it ok? If everyone jumps into the fire, are you going to?
BTW, I am an LEO, but if I get caught, I don't let it be known.
And I have never owned a radar detector in my life, and I am 58 yrs. old. Last citation I had was in 2004, for speeding, 5 over.

I will have to move back to Germany sometime this winter, and after living here for 9 years I must say from a driving standpoint I am really dreading it. Speed enforcement here in Germany is very lax, the occasional speed camera is about all you see. The cops (polezei) don't even run radar in their patrol cars. Add to that the Autobahn, which has speed limit free sections, and it is a fast driver's paradise. Even when you do get a ticket, the fines are not nearly so high as in the States, and BY LAW that ticket cannot be reported to your insurance company! I will miss it here.

I live in a small town and it seems every time I take my RED corvette out I get an escort by our local sheriff(s). I really don't do any speed exhibitions, I just think that the Corvette is the attraction, they're bored and want someone to harass. I've been followed more than 10 miles and then seen the sheriff pull a u-turn (give up). I do have a radar detector because there are a lot of speed traps around here. I also have a fast motorcycle (it really looks fast too) and have been pulled over just traveling with the flow of traffic. Here they're not law officers, they're revenue enhancers.

you clowns better knock on wood
you have just been lucky. I have had 1 in the vette in 4 years, I tell you that you will not get a warning and they will try to inflate the speed when stopping a vette. In my Buick or Suburban I may get a look, but not often. I have actually had a local sheriff follow me through the entire county while I was doing 79 mph (with the cruise) and then he turned off .
even though I have escorts in all my cars and boat they will only keep you honest.

I'd like to add my heartfelt thanks to the LEO community that keeps their radar units on all the time. That alone combined with my V1 has saved me thousands over the years in my cars and motorcycles throughout the eleven western states. I've also noticed that they never run radar if im running uphill. Downhill yes, but never uphill.

And I wouldn't worry about my driving. I've driven accident free for 34 yrs straight. My one and only accident was when I was 16 yrs old and didn't have any experience yet.
I was almost sideswiped a few hours ago, but a driver obeying the speed limit. Pushing the speed limit doesn't make you an unsafe driver.

I never said I wasn't a speeder...I do speed...occasionally. If I get caught, I don't tell the LEO anything, he/she are just doing their job. If I get caught, then I got caught and will pay my fine.
So most are going 15-20 over...does that make it ok? If everyone jumps into the fire, are you going to?

Yes I too am a retired LEO.. & I DON'T make it a habit of speeding, but I AM human and I usually try to drive 7-10 above the posted speed (Conditions permitting.. i.e. traffic, & weather etc)
And I'll be the first to admit that if I get stopped for speeding I will show my ID.. I NEVER am going crazy FAST like 90-100 mph in a 65 zone.. If I'm stopped I'm usually 10-15 over in LIGHT TRAFFIC...
Maybe some don't like the idea, but if I can save myself from increases insurance rates, and points on my license I WILL...
This subject has been beaten to death here on this forum...I would like to start a poll to see how many LEO will show their ID if stopped for speeding... (I'd guess over 95%) but I wouldn't ask other LEO to post it here that they use their ID to avoid a ticket...
Some here think its OK...others think its a "Sacrilege" and that officer should lose his job.. The opinions cover the entire spectrum from "So What, Good for him" ...to he should be arrested for trying to bribe the officer who pulled him over...
When I was active & pulled over a car & it was another LEO I made my decision depending on the circumstances...& I "assume" the other active LEO here do the same.. they look at the "Overall" picture and make a decision based on the circumstances...
Again this JMO...

So it's alright for you to abuse your position as a LEO to get out of tickets and it's alright for you to give others tickets for the same thing you just got out of?

If I stop another LEO I make the decision weather or not to write him up... YES if the average driver is 15 over the limit I "MIGHT" wright him up.. or maybe not.. his attitude & circumstances make a difference...
If he is DWI (LEO or NOT) its a no brainier he gets written up.. however if he is 15 mph over the limit and there is no traffic and its late at night... I might let it go... The same goes for "Joe" average citizen.. if he is 15 over and its 3 am with no traffic, and he has a good attitude.. he most likely will walk with a "VERBAL" warning... but if the first words out of his mouth are "I PAY YOUR SALARY" I tell him I'll see you in court
A lot of variables go into a decision if a LEO writes up another LEO.. its not a "GET OUT OF JAIL FREE" if you have a badge... !!
