CAGS.....C6 manual issue? (skip shift?)
This system is ONLY in manual transmission Corvettes, and is typically referred to as the skip shift, 1st to 4th lockout, 2nd and 3rd lockout, or CAGS, which stands for Computer Aided Gear Selection. This system was designed to help manual transmission Corvettes meet CAFE standards, by preventing certain gear changes under less than optimal conditions.
I understand there is something called shift eliminator (a fuse I believe) that prevents this system (CAGS) from engaging.....
Does anyone know anything about this....I have NEVER hears of CAGS or shift eliminating or any other issues surrounding the shifting of C6 manual transmissions.......
please shed some light here for me.....

The skip shift helps prevent the gas guzzler tax on the Vette. There is a fuse to pull or there are other was to get past it. The simplest would be to just shift over 2500 RPM. Some canned tunes will eliminate it or there is a cags eliminator that can be installed.

There are skip-shift eliminator devices for sale by forum members. Easy to install on the trans-axel. Pull a wire plug and place the eliminator device and you will never again need to be annoyed by that 1 to 4 shift. I have one and love it.

Check out this thread.

I installed the blown smart fuse - it works perfectly.
Just note you probably can't blow the fuse using a battery charger as some posts indicate - the current is too low.
I shorted the fuse across the battery terminals using a jumper wire and rubber grip pliers to hold the fuse.

At one time, the skip-shift eliminator would not keep the skip-shift warning light from coming on. I never had one installed in my first C6, but just thought your friend should know about that.

Easiest way to avoid the skip shift is to prevent the skip shift from activating by changing the way you drive. Skip shift will not activate if you are using more than a certain percentage of throttle opening to get the car moving (not a lot but usually too much when driving in slow traffic), skip shift will not activate if you shift to second gear before 14 mph or after 19 mph. A few days practice and you can save yourself $20.
Sometimes in very slow traffic I will forget to shift to 2nd soon enough and get into a skip shift situation. If you accidentally get into this situation let the shifter go partially into 4th and then shove forward into 3rd. This should be an automatic no thinking operation.
The car operates just fine at very low speeds in 2nd gear so you don't have to worry about shifting too soon.

But at four years of age, the leads broke off the internal resistor and I had to replace the resistor. No big deal as I have a lift so I can stand up while installing the skip shift eliminator. I've found that installing the skip shift eliminator once, and then forgetting about it, is easier than having to change my driving habits every time I drive the car.

It is true that you can avoid having the 1-4 shift come on. I either accelerate in 1st and hold the rpm's around 2-2500 for a second and this let you shift into 2nd easily or I will start going and push in the clutch and hold it for a second or two then shift directly into 2nd with no issues. In both scenarios I am using very little throttle and the car would normally use the 1-4 shift if I didn't do the above variations.

I used the blown-smartfuse method for awhile but the little LED in the smartfuse would die after a short time and trip the engine light. After replacing a few fuses I just decided to drive around the CAGS. I found that it really didn't impact my driving except for the rare Q-tip induced slow start from a stoplight.

I bought my 06 Z06 bone stock and I never have this problem. Maybe the 1st owner installed one or something, but I can shift from 1st to 4th under 1500 rpms with no problem.

CAGS activates under the following parameters for the Corvette (I believe Camaro is the same):
It has been on all manual 6 speed Corvettes since 1989 and all manual 6 speed Camaros since 1994
Elimination methods:
1) skip shift eliminator - several vendors sell these, they are just a resistor plugged into the circuit.
2) blown smartfuse method - works on the same principals as option 1
3) modified driving style - stay out of the parameters for triggering
4) tune - CAGS can be turned off in the tune, doing it this way also eliminates the light.
I've driven a CAGS tranny since 1994 and it is VERY rare that it activates on me.
- The engine coolant temperature is higher than 76°C (169°F).
- The vehicle is going 24 to 31 km/h (15 to 19 mph).
- The vehicle is at 21 percent throttle or less.

I installed the fuse, because it irritates me, as it reminds me of CAFE and the EPA and other eco-wacko nannies like Obama trying to kill our V8 joy.
