Not a fan of front license plate but...
The plate saved my front end. The ONLY time you will ever hear me praise the plate....
Driving to Austin, had a Tractor Trailer rig, sans trailer, blow his drivers side tire 3 cars in front of me doing about 85. A big BOOM, smoke and tire debris everywhere in an instant, cars dodging him as he is fighting to keep from flipping, rim instantly heats up to red hot, truck is all over the place. I'm dodging cars, tire chunks, cars from hitting me from behind, all on a two lane section of I-10 here in Texas. The GS handled beautifully, though the wife was a little worse for wear after the experience.
Well, one chunk of tire piece apparently got through, hit me right in the license plate. Almost tore it off, and scraped the hell out of it. After I got home I noticed it, never felt it as the excitement was going on. Took it off and no damage whatsoever to my beautiful front end. Pics below. Wish the hell they would outlaw retreads....

Man, lucky you. Guess that's one good reason to have a front plate.
Now you can carry around that plate with you in the trunk and when you get stopped for no front plate you can show them that and tell the officer the story!

Lucky. Now leave it off. Much sexier without it. I have not been messed in my 06Z since I had I bought it in Dec of 12'. I live in Houston. But unfortunately someone backed into my car in a parking lot and left some scrapes and spider webbing paint on my front end. Noticeable when you get up close to it, but from a distance you can't see. Going to cost me $400 to repair .

Apparently in Texas you dont have to have a front plate anymore. If this is true sure does give me a little more relief cause Ive never had one on...doesnt look right. In your case I think this was the vette Gods taking it off for you.

Thats the plan, have it in the back with my story ready. I like it much better without the plate obviously...

They didn't pass the law, put it into a committee again is what I heard. I have also heard, that when they renewed it the last time, they left off the penalty for it, but it's still a requirement, which gives them an excuse for a fishing stop to see is they can find something else..

Ok, your the second person that has said its a "law" but there is no fine for it. For me being pulled over for that is just going to be a waste of my time and theirs. Glad your front end isnt messed up though. Where on I10 were you with the accident? you already passed Sealy when it happened?
Not far past Sealy, was going to do the cut over on 71 at Columbus to Austin when the fun began.

That's awesome....
I agree on the retread law or at least have them be responsible for removing the blown tires, or letting someone know there's a road hazard. Not sure what could be done, but just leaving them in the road doesn't seem like a very good option.
I've caught 2 road gators in the last 15 years, and wasn't as lucky as you..
They suck

Good job getting through without more damage. Yesterday on I80 I had to do some 78MPH slalomming through a debri of tire chunks and shreds. My '09 coupe handled it very well; had I been in my class B RV, I would have had to just suck it up and run over some of it.

Yes, I agree that retreads on large trucks that drive the highways should be illegal. Might be OK if they stay on city surface streets.

Wow, just looked at this on the iPad and the pics are upside down...weren't that way when I posted on the laptop. Maybe that's what Davidtcpa was talking about. Strange..
