Brake price
Ok, I don't post much but do enjoy the great information on the Forum.
My 09 vert, Z51, was throwing the dreaded: brake fluid low, service active handling, and service traction control codes in the DIC. I checked the fluid, it looked fine. Took it to the dealer, they cleared the codes and added about a thimble full of brake fluid. And said that I needed new front pads as they were just reaching 4mm and should be replaced.
Now are you ready for the price? Just to install front OE pads $614!

Of course thats rediculous but hey its a dealer. I got my front and rear AC Delco ceramic pads for $50 and installed them myself in an hour. I dont know what they could be charging that much for.

$614 ...Yikes..Damn steelerships ....
I just replaced my front and rear pads myself with AC Delco ceramics(less brake dust on the rims) last weekend and it only cost me around $100

I was nice about it, may need them sometime! I ordered front and back Hawk ceramic from a vender on the Forum that I use a lot. I'll put them on when I get off the boat. I mean its more trouble to get it in the air and take the wheels off, than to replace the pads!

Burning Brakes
Hey Captain....
I would pull, at least the front, wheels and measure them myself. Dealers are notorious for estimating the wear left on pads and 4mm seems to be the universal number.
Had 2 different cars into a GM Dealer for warranty issues. A "10,000" point inspection is done automatically. Both cars were at 4 mm. I was going to have the one done....but then declined, thinking that I will buy the pads and do it myself.
Long story shortened.....I bought the OEM pads, pulled the wheels and was pi$$ed. The pads measured 7.5 MM and 8 MM. Big difference from the 4MM stated by the "inspection".
The other car measured 6.5 MM.
I had a serious talk with the Service Manager

You know, dealerships have overhead. I'll assume that includes parts (2 sets front brake pads), labor and materials (brake fluid). Was there also a separate diagnostic charge and a fee for the service technician to use a Tech 2 Tool to clear the DTC's? Brake pads can get pricey....dealership (vendor) markup on parts is ridiculous. I'm guessing they charged you $400 + just for the front brake pads. I'm not trying to justify what dealership's charge IMO $614 to install front pads is beyond a ripoff! What really irritates me is the dealership "book" charge for service. The book might say changing the front pads is a 2 hour service charge but it really only takes an hour to do. You still pay what the book says.
Learn and do what you can yourself. Find alternative service facilities. For the few things when a dealership is truly needed, bend-over!
