Default f55 shocks

I have a 2006 corvette with magnetic suspention. Both of my front shocks are leaking. The shocks are $1040 each!!! You guys got any ideas of where to get some cheaper ones or is GM the only option???

GM is it as far as I know, but you should check several vendors (including the aftermarket that carry GM products) since I've seen prices vary by several hundred dollars each. You might also check the "parts wanted or for sale" forums to see if someone might have a set of used take-off MR shocks that they want to get rid of.

What you might also want to consider is replacing all the shocks with a nice set of Bilstein's for about $400-$500 for the entire set, and then buy a set of F55 adapters to plug in to the shock connector plugs to cancel out the error that would happen since the MR shocks would no longer be there the plug into. A much less costly alternative that would give you a similar ride, at least compared to the normal mode.

Confirm that it's shock oil and not some other product by soaking up the oil in question with a towel and then see if you can pick it up with a magnet.

They don't fail often, but unfortunately when they do, it's an expensive repair.

I just replaced my front F55 shocks a couple of weeks ago. I purchased them through Amazon for $537.00 each.
They are fairly easy to install with patience, a couple of floor jacks, zip ties and a few other common tools.

I replaced the rears last year. They cost slightly more.

If the front ones are truly leaking and need replaced, also try getting used ones from wrecking yards. I'm over 110K on mine and they're still bone dry.

I'd guess the average C6 only has 40K miles, so used shocks wouldn't be used very much. I've heard of a set of 4 being sold for $200.

Like **** Jockey mentioned, check them well before make a hurried purchase. Front shocks are notorious for collecting road oil and brake dust.

I have not use them yet, but there is a place called Corvette Recycling that might help. If anyone has experience with them, please chime in.

I hadn't read of Jimbeaux's good find before, but the two forum GM parts vendors have been the best in price. Don't know if they top Jim's tho. And do make sure they're leaking. Do you have any good indie shops that work on Corvettes wherever you live (no town name in profile)? They could install them if you got them.

I thought there was a thread over in Buy/Sell/Trade where someone was trying to sell a set?

The cost on those shocks is nuts. If money is a problem you could put regular shocks on and use these simulators. I would think you could get four regular shocks and simulators for around $500.

FWIW.... my 2005 had f55 and my 2011 doesn't and I dont miss it at all.

One would think that as more cars come with this Magnetic Ride Suspension option that the cost of the shocks would go down.

I agree, but they should last a very long time. I replaced the rears at 134,000 miles and the fronts at 170,000 miles. The rears showed evidence of very minor leaking and at deinstall I noticed they were also weaker than the new ones. Ride improved noticeably upon replacement.
The original fronts had no evidence of leaking, but my plan after replacing the rears was to do the fronts a year later. This lessened the impact to my wallet By finding the OEM parts at great prices and being able to do the work myself, I was quite pleased. If a dealer were to supply parts and replace all four, it would be around $4,000 dollars including labor.
I also want to add that Amazon has great prices too. I needed a new throttle body a few months back and found the best deal there as well.

Thanks for the info. I called GM and expressed my feelings. They set me up with an appointment at the GM dealership for Thursday to have them verify they are leaking then GM said they would see what they could do. I'll let you now how it turns out.

2012 GS Dealer just replaced both front MRC shocks for leaking this week. Car has 9,800 miles. My 05 with the same shocks is 8 years old and 68,000 miles no problem with the MRC shocks.

Like I said before it seems to be that the later model Corvettes have more problems than the first ones from 2005.
