Default Finding Fault Codes - myself

Before I take my 2013 427 vert to the dealer to diagnose an Engine Fault light can I get access to the codes myself. What can I purchase and then attach to the vehicle that will give me the codes?

Go to Autozone, Discount Tire, or any one of a number of autopart chains and 99% of them will walk out to your car, plug in a code reader, and tell you the code. If you don't want to drive the car there, many of them will loan you the reader for free or for a very small fee.

Check your gas cap. A loose cap with throw a code and set the light as part of the EVAP system.

If you feel compelled to spend money, Google "OBD II Code Readers" and you'll find the sky is the limit, starting at ~$40 and going up to a couple thousand depending on system and other capabilities it may have. Some like EFI Live, some like AutoTap, some have other preferences.

Buy one of these on eBay about 10-20 bucks

Then get the torque smart phone app! Enjoy! Check codes, 1/4 times, track recorder etc. awesome.

After Zone said they cleared my code and walked back in the store while I noticed they didn't, I said I gotta get a CAN enabled one for my toolbox.

Simple, basic and cheap:

Amazon.com: Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles: Automotive Amazon.com: Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles: Automotive
