Get it locally too. Good advice at the bottom of this post.

Here's the spare key I keep in my wallet. Same for Saturn cars, # B106. (B106P has a plastic head). Cost about $5 at a local key shop.

And be sure each key will actually open the lock. Some folks never use the key... until there's an emergency... only to discover the key "doesn't work." http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...pen-hatch.html

If your key absolutely does not work, see post #34: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...tal-key-2.html

I had one made at Home Depot, and taped it under the car for back-up!

Like 1bdvet, I had mine made at Home Dept for $5, but I went a few steps farther.

#1. I used duct tape and taped the key to the back of my license plate.
#2. I ordered a spare key fob,(#3), programmed it and removed the battery.(spare fob from Performnce Corvettes @$100).
#3. I hid the fob under the dash.
#4. In an emegency, I used the key to open the hatch, then the door release cables.
#5. Got the fob, put it in the receptacle in the glove box, started the car.

TOTAL COSTS APPROX $110

Dealer gets $275 for fob, $75 for key blade blank, and 1 hour shop time to program @ $ 130 = $480

AVOID THE DEALER WHEN POSSIBLE !

Did one better, taped the spare key under the car, cause if I used the car plate would need screw driver to get the key.
Then took the second remote, wrapped in aluminum foil, and placed it in the rear compartment. When it's in aluminum foil no signal gets out.
The last thing I did was cut quarter size circle with duct tape, and cleaned and lubed the trunk lock, then covered it so dirt won't get in and recent the key from entering.

That rear compartment can get very hot, so it might be better to take the battery out. It's not necessary to have one installed in the fob in order to work.

Out the door price was $2 for the blank with no plastic top cut at a locksmith. The dealer wants $75 plus labor to cut because they do so few and it is a blank that will fit inside the fob also making it rare. Without the plastic top it is a common blank.

Recent--and first time--Vette owner here. I've been almost embarrassed to ask this question up till now, but since this thread is already here….

I'm aware of the key that is inside the fob and want to try it to make sure it works, but to be honest, I've dinked around trying to get it out of the fob and never been able to remove it. Not causing any problems N-O-W, but sure as day turns to night, I'm gonna need it sometime. Help me with this? And be gentle with the stupid ones…

Oh yeah, '13 GS if it makes a difference.

Are you depressing the little release bar/button on the side?

you have to press this little bar and pull the end off, it can be a little stubborn.

icntdrv55, I apologize, while I was typing my reply GL10DR posted the pic and mine is a duplicate, sorry guys and gals.

Like "fred D" said, the tab must be depressed. See pic of tab just below the opening for the keyring.

If thats the issue, you need to hold this in and seperate the key from the fob. Then you will see this.

Thx! Hate sounding dumb, but I'm gonna pass it off as old-timers disease. Guess the locking tab was a little tight/sticky from the newness and I was afraid I'd break it.

GL10DR: What's that middle button with the cryptic circular arrow? I don't have that on my fobs. If that's a push button to automatically turn your car around in a tight space, I want one of those!!!

GL10DR,

My 2008 remote looks different than yours,(i think you drive a 2012 GS).

I wonder if the remotes work the same and whether one like mine could be programmed to open your car and vice versa.

I know they changed the fobs a few times but those were shaped differently.

The circular arrow is the icon for remote start...used on Cadillacs. Does nothing on the C6 even when the fob is programmed to the car and everything else works.

As well you should have. Many on here have broken it. Make sure it works and then leave it in place, the mechanism is a weak point. In fact that whole fob is a weak point when the battery needs replacing.
