Oil Change - reset oil life counter?
Just had my oil changed last week. When I was driving, I cycled through the sensors and noticed my oil life remaining was at 9%. Pretty bad considering it was just changed!
I'm assuming that this has to be reset by the dealer when they do the oil change and is in no way a representation that they "forgot" to change the oil. Can anybody enlighten me a little more on how it works?

I also found out, if you have the engine running it will to 99%, but if in accessories it goes back to 100%.

Cycle through the Option menu. Once you have the oil life showing press and hold the Reset button for I believe 2 second. It will either go to 100% or 99%. Some say if the engine is off you will get the 100% and engine running 99%. Either way it is reset.
I thought I would try an get you the answer before you got a reply, "Check your Owners Manual".

And after you have reset the oil life, do not switch to another setting until you've waited about 10 seconds or so, otherwise that new setting's value will reset too.

The car knows when you fill the gas tank and resets itself. The oil life knows nothing and if you have the dealer change your oil good luck. You don't know if they changed or if they used the right oil. BTW check your rocker panels everytime and check the dip stick.

So after a big run-around they finally showed me the work order, and the sales-kid said that the mechanic "forgot" to reset it. I have a copy of the work order but I'm still not sure I believe them.
Through life's experiences, and this shouldn't surprise anyone here, anything any car dealer (or politician) ever tells me I assume to be a lie until proven otherwise. Does the official looking piece of paper from a (large) Chevy dealer prove it? I dunno.
There's more to the story, but not the oil part . . .

Wow, some of the absurd paranoia I see is pretty entertaining. If you really feel the dealer/shop didn't change your oil, pull the dipstick. If it's dark, they messed up. If it's almost clear, reset the damn monitor and enjoy the cruise; yes, people make mistakes, and forgetting to hold a button for 3 seconds isn't cause to call the district attorney. If it's that much of an anxiety issue(fear of damage or plain mistrust), change your own oil. It takes 20 minutes, and 15 of that is just waiting for the old oil to drain.
Also, why are people changing their oil at 40,50, even 60% oil life? I can understand if you never drive it, but "just to be safe?" Send your spare change my way, since you're just throwing money out the window. My daughter's school tuition just went up, I could use a few extra bucks.

My car only knows that when I set the trip and hit reset.
On the 99% or 100% I have 50 -50 luck on that. First time it was 100 and second time the dealer used my parts and of course did not reset it so I fooled with it driving down the road and got 99%. I doubt they even knew how to set it.

This applies any time you reset any of the readings. I discovered this when my car was very new and I was doing a familiarization. Found the timer and thought that was cool. Reset it and stepped on through. I stopped at the oil life monitor which was in the high 90's because the car was new. It was OK but a second or so later it went to 99%. More testing found that it will reset anything that can be reset that you stop on 10 seconds after resetting something else. I reset most of the values (avg. mph, avg. speed, etc.) at every fill-up. As I'm resetting I always skip through oil life as fast as I can since that is the only value that has dire consequences if it is reset accidentally.

I asked the mechanic why he was using individual quart containers of Mobil 1 instead of bulk, or 5 qt. jugs.
He said...."we used to have bulk Mobil 1, but the Corvette guys complained that they didn't know what we were putting in their cars, so we went to individual quarts so they could see. Sorry he said but the Corvette customers are the most difficult to deal with."
I responded by saying,...."maybe that's because we are all so tired of seeing our cars improperly serviced, and even damaged by incompetent repair facilities."
Yeah, we got a long just fine.

Either the engine must be running where you will get 99% or in run mode without the engine running (hold the bottom of the start button for 10 seconds) where you will get 100%. I just accept 99% while running the engine for oil leaks after the change because the difference (99-100) is negligible.

And the environmentalists are right in line with what a lot of gas stations used to do with oil changes.

I'm sorry that you find my distrust of car dealers amusing, but after 46 years of dealing with them this is where I'm at: I assume they're crooks, unless and until proven otherwise.
Every time they walk up, shake your hand and say, "Mr. Xxxxx, congratulations, you just bought a new Xxxxx!" -- you know you just got screwed.
