Default license tag cost

Just received my renewal for my '13 Vette. WOW... In Minnesota I have to
pay $844.00 to drive the vehicle. Most the time it is in the garage or the snow is to deep to drive it. Crazy....

Wow....if you truly mean your state license tags & not your insurance renewal, then that's nuts! Just renewed my NJ license tags & fee was $39.46......

Yea, many, maybe most, states are like that.

About the same here in Nev, also Az and Ca.

The lowest I knew of was Oregon where we used to live, $43/year for any car.

They have to get their money somehow.

Here in NY they go by weight of vehicle. My registration is about $68 for two years.

If you think about it, the price you pay for your license plate renewal every year should be based on how old (or expensive) the vehicle is ... That's how Arizona and Florida does it.

A guy that owns a 75 Ford F-150 truck should not have to pay the same for plates as a rich guy that owns a 2013 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse.

Florida tags this year for my 2011 GS cost me $77.65

Plates for my wife's 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV were cheaper.

They go by the msrp cost new minus the documentation fee here in MI. MY plates were $206 for this year. That's only 31.70 per month that I drive it

The states will get their tax money one way or the other. Looks like those of you in high property tax states like NY and NJ get a break on license plates. But your property taxes are high. I pay about $1800 tax on my 3000 sq ft house, and about $400 for the Vette. So our property taxes are fairly low, but the car tags are pretty high. And our sales tax is 9%. It all works out in the wash.

$24 a year in TN, unless you want a personal tag like I do, then it's an extra $35.

I think several counties have an extra wheel tax, but not where I live.

Auto tag fees in Florida are based on weight - not vehicle value:

Automobiles (less than 2,500 pounds) $19.50
Automobiles (2,500-3,500 pounds) $30.50
Automobiles (3,500 or more pounds) $44.00

North Carolina has combined the License Fee and the County Personal Property Tax so now when I renew it is north of $700 for the 427 and $300 for the GS Clone.

Basically, it is a tax on cars based upon how much they cost when new or value (depending on the state). I had an ancient luxury car that was more expensive to license than my Corvette because of what it retailed for when new! Usually these taxes are deductible as a tax paid to the state on your income taxes, but that only allows recovering a fraction of the fee.

Years ago when I lived in a high tax state, I bought a new luxury car in December. Taxes would have been more than a thousand for that calendar year, but if I waited until January the $1000+ would cover the full calendar year. I put an old plate on the car and took off on vacation to Florida.

The State of Illness, is $101.00 for my '13 GS.

For all those complaining about high renewal costs... if they don't get the tax revenue that way, they will just raise the money another way. In the end, we all pay too much, for what is actually delivered.

Our vanity plates are $45/yr but I pay roughly $4000 in personal property tax and that's not including real estate property. They get you one way or the other.

This is expensive but in some states aren't cars considered property like your house? maybe so in Minn. With cars being considered property you can carry in the glove box. Back east not so much

I put 2000 miles on my 2013 427 last year, and I just paid $1398.50 for my plates in Nebraska! I considered taking my chances with getting picked up for driving an unregistered vehicle!

Looks like several states are now combining personal property taxes with license cost.

It's a tax any way you look at it.
