Default Help!! Found Nail in Tire!!!

Found this today on my car tire. I currently have the original tires that came with the corvette. They have 7500 miles on them. My question is this. Can the tire be safely plugged or patched, or is it in a position where I am going to have to purchase a new tire. I have never plugged a tire, but I have seen videos on facebook, which seem pretty safe forward. I have both a plug kit and a compressor. Your help would be greatly appreciated. The tire location is the driver front tire and the tire is a Goodyear Eagle F1 runflat p245/40ZR18. Thanks in advance.

The proper way to repair the tire is to dismount, and install a vulcanized patch from the inside. A plug might work, but is not the best method. Don't let the tire jockies tell you the EMT tires can't be patched - that's BS !
Pull the nail out and see if it penetrated the carcass of the tire and if it is leaking air. I picked up a small nail several months ago and it was so short it did not totally penetrate the tire.

Got one fixed. That looks repairable with an inside patch and rebalance. Do not pull the nail out till at a place you can fix it.

Looks like it's too close to the sidewall to be "legally" repaired. I seem to recall if it's within an inch of the sidewall it's not repairable. But the tire looks virtually new ... I think I'd give it a shot if you can find a shop that will do it.

it can not be fixed. either leave it in and add air if and when it leaks, plug it, or replace it.

Looks too close to the sidewall for repair. I'd just leave it alone and monitor the pressure to see if it's leaking. As above, it may not have fully penetrated.

Just yesterday I had a nail in my wife's car in about that same spot and the tech at Discount Tire said it was too close to the sidewall to be repaired. Inch and a half or greater from the sidewall.

Those are really for a temporary repair until the correct way (dismount tire and patch from inside) can be performed.

I was going across a 4-lane divided highway at a light one time (where the ups and downs are and all sorts of debris collects), and ran over what turned out to be brake pad that was worn so much it had a knife edge. It was still inside the tire when I took it to the shop. The result was a blowout with about a six inch gash. Fortunately, I was going pretty slow since I'd stopped at a light.

There's all sorts of stuff to hit on the roads.

I agree with the others. Much to close to the sidewall. Best to replace it. I took my wife to pick up her vehicle after some service. She was following me on the interstate when I noticed she was drifting close to the rumble strips. Made a quick call to find out what was going on. Her reply was "just jammin" to the music". I went on, she went home. 5mins later she calls and says "I have a flat tire". (shocking) New vehicle with her summer tires/wheels on. Totally destroyed $459 tire.

I was just about to post that, MAN THESE TIRES ARE EXPENSIVE!!!!! lol. One tire 350ish bucks plus balancing WOW!!

Im contemplating just replacing all four tires to non run flats but I'm unsure on which ones to look at. Any recommendations?

My wife's car had less than 5k miles on it so the guy at Discount Tire sold me road hazard warranty ($12 a tire) on the four tires on the car plus the one new tire I needed, for a total of $60. He then gave me the new tire at no charge under the road hazard warranty. I love DT...

I'm a former Tire Engineer at Dunlop. If it were my tire, I would plug it and never drive over 80 mph on that tire.

If you want to play it safe, you should replace the tire. If you plug it, do so at your own risk, and don't drive at high speed.

Take it to a reputable tire place Discount Tire they will remove the tire plug it and also patch it on the inside remount and balance it and you are good to. What I did to my brand new tire that had a nail in it in almost the same place.
