Default Question about S Drive in an A6

When I put my 2008 in S which is for paddle shifting....if you don't use the paddle shifters, the the car stays in S and actually shifts and operates better than when in Drive? Why is this and is it ok to leave it and drive it in S without the paddle shifters?

Because it's sports mode. And yes it's fine.

D us the softer, lower rev economy shift mode. S is the FUN lower MPG mode.

I keep mine in "S'" mode 99% of the time. Sometimes I use the paddles, other times I just let it shift on it's own.
In S mode, your just one touch of the paddle away from downshifting if you have to stop fast, or you want to play

The 1st thing I do after starting the engine is two pushes on the button and then put the car in Sport mode.

But you can still downshift with the paddles in "D" also, just it will return to automatic and not stay there permanently.

Not on an '08, which is what the OP has. IIRC that programming change happened starting with the '10 models.

If you use "S" without using the paddles, the tranny will hold the lower gears a little longer if you're getting on it a little.

2008 owner's manual, page 2-28.

SPORT MODE (S): When in SPORT MODE (S), the
transmission will work as an automatic until you use the
Manual Paddle Shift Controls, which activates the
driver manual gear selection. See Manual Paddle Shift
later in this section. While in automatic SPORT
MODE (S), the transmission computer determines when
the vehicle is being driven in a competitive manner
and will select and hold the transmission in lower gears
and have more noticeable upshifts for sportier vehicle
performance.

Also; On the '08 if you are using the paddles in "S" the transmission won't downshift to first by itself. If you don't put it in first with the paddles the transmission stays in second and you leave the stop sounding like an old school Powerglide.
