Default 2006 hatch won' latch

Looking for info, if anyone knows. Push the hatch down and can hear the pull down working, but it will not hold the hatch down, it's like the lock isn't engaging. Have searched the ferorum and found a lot of instances where the hatch won't open but not one on the hatch not closing. Things I have done is WD-40 the crap out of the latch assembly and changed the 15A fuse for the release mechanism. I don't hear any clicking or noise at all when activating the release button under dash or with FOB and also the mechanical key route doesn't sound like anything is moving. I would like to try all options before ordering a new latch assembly. Any help would be most appreciated as it's my wife"s daily driver but it crapped out me on the way home from a ballgame.

What happens when you slam it shut with a window or two open so that the pull down mechanism is not necessary?

Is it not shutting or not opening?
The release buttons will not make a sound if the hatch is open.

Not shutting either with pull down or slamming with doors open.

It might just be out of adjustment. Try pulling the carpet back and loosening the screws and lifting up on the latch mechanism and tightening the screws. I don't think it is made to be adjustable but there is probably enough play around the screws to allow it to move.

I have not tried this and it may not be as easy as I made it sound. I did see some pictures of one being installed on a Z06 which does not come with the pull down mechanism.

Here is a link to a long thread with lots of info about the latch. The OP of the thread had a different problem but you may find something of value.....

thanks for the link, will read and see if it relates, most of what I see on the forum is problems with it opening or not closing because of it being too air tight. I think my problem is the locking mechanism that holds it down isn't working. Even the mechanical release doesn't feel like its hooked to anything.

I tried to gain a little "lift" to the latch but didn't do any good. Thanks for idea, I'll keep researching until I am convinced to shell out the bucks for a new latch.

About 2 years ago when my original battery started going on me I had the same symptoms as you are having now. I didn't put it together until I replaced the battery and the problem resolved itself. Just a thought.

OK, I ended up replacing the latch and the new one is working great. One difference I noticed is that where the key lock cable attaches was "sloppy" loose on the old one, like it wasn't hooked to anything, the new old felt attached. I believe that the locking portion of the latch assembly broke.
