Default Advice on buying 2013 427, bad stories on the ls7?

Really want a 66 or 67 427 4sp convertible side pipe car but considering they want 80k plus for a middle of the road car (shiny paint busted up repaired and painted rusty frame) I'm out.

I'm a HP junky so I want the ls7 and I am a convertible only but I have seen so many ls7's dropping valves it's hard to pay 60k or so for a mint 5k or less car and have to worry about it dropping valves!

would the grand sport be a better option?

any thoughts on the future value of the 2013 427 convertible? considering base models will soon pass it's hp and new z06 etc..I'm not big on supercharged engines unless I want to add more hp which in that case makes it easy (2015 z06) so the 2013 427 is standing out to me if I knew the engine wouldn't be a pain to deal with.

I love my Z06 wouldnt trade it for anything its probably the closest car you will get to the C6R right out of the box. I was a convertible guy as well but this car is heads and tails above almost everything out driving every day, every where. As for the valves most people are putting cams in theirs so your already beyond any head problems. Look up ultimate factories Corvette and you will see the extras that got into the Z06 that makes them lighter and more race oriented best bang for the buck car in the world.

If you want one get one and if you're worried about the valve issue, just get a GMPP extended warranty. You can purchase GMPP up until the 3/36 warranty runs out. Problem solved.

Man, I have to agree with the last comment. Get the extended warranty if it concerns you enough. The 2013 427 is such a gorgeous car and I have fantasies about trading up my 2008 coupe for one... of course, I like staying married better.

Yeah but, what if he keeps it past the warranty? I had the same dilemma. I went with the GS. Peace of mind is important.

If it makes a difference the car I'm looking to buy won't be sold PERIOD. I have a 58 that i'm doing a body off on currently 68 vert 4sp 427 I restored had these cars for years I don't sell them and If I buy this 13 427 I will never sell it so the engine issues are a concern.

I am new here, but thinking I read where there is a check one can have done at a dealership for this issue. Wanting to say $300 range? Did not save the thread in terms of marking it, but know it was on this forum.

The problem with an engine failure is that it usually takes some BS with GM then about 2 weeks to repair. I wouldn't worry about value of any new Vette right now as you are basically losing around $1-2k a month on a new Vette for the first 2 years. OP compared an old $80k 427 in this thread but that car will probably hold its value or be worth more.

I thought on the 13s the valves were okay. Now it's the bearings that die early isn't it? Still bad, just different bad.

Shortly before the end of a GMPP extended warranty he could go ahead and replace the heads if he is still concerned at that point.

You are only hearing about the limited few issues out there. There are a lot of good cars with no issues. Get a warranty if worried. There are more issues with the steering gear than the engine. Which is a minor issue compared to dropping the engine.

value drop, rod bearings, split block, cam bearings, failed oil pumps, worn cam lobes, lifter issues just to name a few issues with the ls7. kit kat engine. id never own one as a daily if it didnt have warranty. in 25 yrs in the industry ive never seen or heard of so many failure from factory unmodified engines more than the ls7 and they havent even reached 10 yrs old yet. heapsof failure stories with engines with only a few 1000 miles on em. hate to imagine what drama they will have in 10 yrs tym with the ones that havent shat themselves yet. id take any other LS engine just not the ls7.

a lot more than any other factory sports engine and definately a lot more than ls1,2,3,9 etc etc. can u name another engine in a "sports car" that as failed as often with as little miles or time on the clock? name one?? anyone that thinks an ls7 is a long term reliable engine is in denial. the things are less than 8 yrs old and alteast eod u see another "**** my ls7 just blew up" post on this forum let alone the ones u dont hear about. plus how many cars run the ls7?? not many but u still hear of the failure more than the mass produced base model ls powered cars. if its such a good engine why are these concern address every day on this forum? why does every suggest either warranty or rip the heads off straight away? u buy a 80k car and u need to spend more to make sure to fix chevs *** ups??

I think a supercharged ls3 is a better option. If its not, then why did they go with a supercharged 6.2 ltr in the C7Z? The C6Z just wasn't reliable enough. Seen too many worn valve guides firsthand to believe this is an abuse issue. Some of them were original owner cars.
