Default Oil Filter ACDelco

I bought some Mobil 1 oil at WallyWorld and was going to also buy an oil filter. I have a 2006 A6 vet and it calls for an ACDelco PF 46 filter. WallyWorld had some PF 46E filters in stock. Since I did not know what the "E" stands for I passed on buying the filter. Can someone tell me what the difference is between the PF46E and a PF46 filter is?

And here is the information listed, but there is a better exploded picture of the new "E" filter over there too...........

ACDelco has announced a redesigned Original Equipment (OE) oil filter that offers ACDelco's exclusive Duraguard® media in a smaller package.

The new OE filter applications PF46E, PF47E, PF52E and PF61E will be installed in applicable new GM models.

The new oil filter features:

• Increased efficiency and higher burst and collapse strength (Fig. 5, A)
• A new Nylon core that provides better flow characteristics and improved collapse strength
(Fig. 5, B)
• A full cover baseplate that allows easy installation in blind applications (Fig. 5, C)
• Duraguard media, ACDelco's trademarked synthetic cellulose-blended media that
efficiently filters particles as small as 10 microns -- 1/3 the width of a human hair -- to
ensure a clean supply of oil to engine components (Fig. 5, D)
• A combination relief and anti-drainback valve that prevents dry starts and assures oil flow
(where applicable) (Fig. 5, E)

In addition to the new OE design oil filter applications, the original filters (PF46, PF47, PF52 and PF61) continue to be available in a classic design.

The last Ac filter I used leaked real bad where the top was rolled during manufacturing.

Interesting...My manual, 2007, shows a PF48 and that is what I use... The "E" is for the "E core" filters and there are those that will not use them.. I have seen pics of the larger holes in the plastic core that has allowed blow thru of the media. Lots of info over at BITOG.com about them... personally, I use the standard PF48.

I thought I heard that the drainback check valve was different, but it was so long ago, I just don't remember. I think the size is the same. I just remember double checking because I have an '07 that I got in early '08.

The change was for standardization. The LS7 was introduced in MY2006 with the PF48. To avoid confusion, GM should have switched the LS2 to the PF48 at the same time instead of a year later. The LS7 was not designed with the relieving device in the block so it was put in the filter hence the PF48. The PF48 has a different mounting thread pitch and therefore is not interchangeable with the older 44 and 46 series filters.

Basically the same size but the 48 series has an internal relief device where the 44 & 46 series did not because the relief device was in the block. All of the 44/46/48 series filters include anti-drain back valves.
